Als de zon ondergaat boven de rivier de Arno, steek je Oltrarno in, de rustigere helft van Florence die de lokale bevolking nooit heeft verlaten. Je Gids neemt je mee naar een eeuwenoude fiaschetteria voor lokale wijn in combinatie met borden gebouwd op Toscaanse cucina povera, naar een wijnraam dat nog steeds precies wordt gebruikt zoals het was in de pestjaren van Florence, en naar een delicatessenwinkel waar de zelfbenoemde koning van kaas je zijn beste pecorino- en parmigianokazen laat proeven. Er is een Negroni les in een historische wijnwinkel, een langzaam gekookte stoofpot bij je Super Toscaanse wijn, en een gelato finish van de winkel Florentijnen verkozen tot hun eigen favoriet. Een kleine groep, en zes of zeven zorgvuldig geselecteerde stops.

Bezoek een Wine Window en proef overheerlijke charcuterieplanken gecombineerd met de heerlijkste wijn, allemaal geserveerd in een kelder die teruggaat tot de XII eeuw!
Stap binnen in een door een familie gerunde winkel die wordt gerund door een man uit de buurt die is gekroond tot King of Cheese, proef twee stijlen pecorino en een parmigiano terwijl hij met volle overtuiging zijn pleidooi voor de titel houdt.
Leer het verhaal achter Florence's Wine Windows, kleine openingen gebouwd voor de pest-tijdperk wijnverkoop, heropend in de afgelopen jaren. Bruschetta met stracciatella en een glas Toscaanse wijn komen naast de geschiedenis.
In een trattoria gerund door een moeder-zoon duo, zie je gnudi (naakt pasta) aan tafel gegooid en geborduurd, gecombineerd met een glas Chianti Classico, een van de meest streng gereguleerde wijnen van Toscane, en een van de beste.
Deze fiaschetteria schenkt al sinds de jaren vijftig wijn in voor de restaurants van Oltrarno. Hier leert u een echte Negroni te maken voordat u zich vestigt in een stoofpot van wilde zwijnen met een glas Super Toscaanse wijn, geserveerd via een eigen wijnvenster.
Sluit de avond af met een korte les in het spotten van echte ambachtelijke gelato, proef vervolgens twee smaken uit een winkel Florentijnen zelf verkozen tot de beste van de stad. Het neonkleurige spul bij toeristenkraampjes zal je niet meer verleiden.

Elissa was a fantastic guide to the Oltrarno! She clearly had wonderful relationships with the shops and restaurants, told fantastic stories about the products and the neighborhood, and showed us a wonderful time. Communication with Eli was very easy in terms of finding the meet up spot. I would take this tour again!

Fantastic tour of some of the more hidden gems in Florence, on the “other side of the river”. Great to experience a range of foods and wines from the region with a hugely knowledgeable host, small group and feel part of the city, not just a tourist. Catered well for non dairy eating parts of the group too, no mean feat in a world of all pasta and cheese!!!

We had our tour with Elisa, who had a fantastic knowledge of all things food and wine in Florence.
