Steek het kanaal van Korinthe over dat een taak uit de oudheid was, bezoek het oude Korinthe, een van de rijkste oude Griekse steden, bewonder de tempel van Zeus in Nemea (de enige waar je op kunt stappen), ren het spoor van een van de beroemdste stadions van het oude Griekenland en proef de goddelijke nemeïsche wijn, omringd door wijngaarden.

We gaan door naar Ancient Corinth. De stad wordt gedomineerd door de heuvel van Acrocorinth. De locatie aan de voet van de heuvel omvat de Romeinse Agora van Korinthe, de tempel van god Apollo en een klein museum. Naast het archeologische en historische belang is Ancient Corinth ook een van de meest populaire religieuze bestemmingen in Griekenland, omdat hier de apostel Paulus het christendom predikte, door het tribunaal in de Agora werd beoordeeld en de best georganiseerde christelijke kerk van die periode werd opgericht.
De tempel van Apollo in Korinthe is een van de vroegste Dorische tempels op de Peloponnesos en op het Griekse vasteland. De archaïsche tempel, gebouwd rond 560 v.G.T., van lokale monolithische kalksteen op de top van een imposante, rotsachtige heuvel ten noorden van Acrocorinth, was een embleem voor de Griekse stad Korinthe en weerspiegelde haar groei en welvaart.
We bezoeken het kasteel van Acrocorinth, het oudste en grootste kasteel in Zuid-Griekenland, voor een aantal fantastische foto's.
Na het bezoek aan de site gaan we op weg naar een van de Nemean-wijngaarden. We rijden door de druiventuinen van de grootste wijnproductiezone van Griekenland en bezoeken een van de beste wijnhuizen. Mensen geven je graag een kleine rondleiding en laten je de druiventuinen, de opslagvaten zien, met uitleg over de procedure die plaatsvindt tot het bottelen. Uiteindelijk wordt je aangeboden om enkele van hun beste variëteiten te proeven terwijl je uitzicht hebt op de Nemean-vallei.

Ten slotte zullen we naar de stad Nafplio rijden voor onze laatste stop, beschouwd als de meest schilderachtige stad, die tot 1834 als de hoofdstad van Griekenland functioneerde.
Na een wandeling in de idyllische oude stad stoppen we voor de lunch in een traditionele taverne aan zee, en rijden we naar het kasteel van Acronafplia voor een panoramisch uitzicht op Nafplio.
Nafplio biedt u een uitstekende combinatie van forten en kastelen (Palamidi), Bourtzi, een enorme haven die is geopend voor de Egeïsche Zee en de unieke architectuur van de oude stad Nafplion met Venetiaanse, neoklassieke en oosterse elementen.
Daarna beginnen we op onze weg terug langs de oostkust van het schiereiland Peloponnesos om Athene weer te bereiken.
De tour begint met een rit langs de kust, onderweg zie je enkele Griekse kustdorpjes en het eiland Salamis (waar de historische zeeslag plaatsvond tussen de Atheners en de Perzen). Onze eerste stop is het kanaal van Korinthe. Geopend in 1892, scheidde het schiereiland Peloponnesos van de rest van Griekenland en verbond het de Saronische Golf met de Korinthische Zee. Je hebt tijd om over een voetgangersbrug te lopen om het kanaal dichterbij te bewonderen.

We were met at our Athens hotel by our very knowledgeable driver, Terry. We had a great, very informative, yet long day with him. We started by driving from a city centre hotel to the Corinth Canal for quick picks and a walk across it. We visited lots of sites, including Ancient Nemea and the Temple of Zeus, which we enjoyed. We would skip to the stadium as few historic objects remain. The trip to the top of the hillside for a short hike to the castle doors was also nice. Time only allowed for about a 30-minute visit, which was just enough to snap a few great photos. Our winery visit did not include a tour of the fields (e.g., vineyards) as their new tasting room location is not convenient. Instead, we received only an inside tour of their barrel room. We have visited many wineries around the world, so it was fine to miss a tour on this visit. The four wine tastings were nice, and they came with nibbles including bread pieces with olive oil, local raisins and chunks of cheese. We had lunch on the coast, which was a bit of a drive. We suggest offering additional food selections at the winery in the future, perhaps paired with a glass of wine. Their wine was very tasty. We would recommend the tour to anyone interested in a full-day historic tour.

Wonderful experience! From the time we were picked up, Elias took very good care of us! He was amazing— tweaked our trip according to our interests, and anticipated our needs! He was also very knowledgeable of Greek history and the sites we visited! The winery tour-tasting was a highlight of the day. They were nestled in the green vineyards and surrounded by mountains. They also used ancient clay jar aging process. This was the best Cabernet we have EVER tasted. Elias provided an unforgettable experience for us!

A “lovely” day with a nice driver outside of Athens. However, reading description & brief emails with travel company prior to booking….not as expected & too much “on your own” time. Travel out of Athens is calm, driver did share general info about region. But this is more of a day with a nice driver & limited/no guiding . Canal stop & historical sites are reading signage & not real discussions. Apollo Temple & Museum on your own is interesting, but you need to prepare in advance to get the depth & significance. (I turned down visiting another archaeological site) Wine country visit is one winery, although good, included a brief tour and several tastes. Asking to stop to potentially find other wine or olive oil stops, potential “up charges” and not possible. I would call this more of a drive & not a tour.

The wine tasting tour was one of the most unique trips that I had. I am glad that it was part of the tour and Alexander, our tour guide, made sure that he I had a good time. Along the way, he talks about greek mythology and I learned so much about him. He is the best tour guide and the company must be very lucky to have him because he does his job very well. He answered all my questions to the best of his knowledge. The location is roughly a 2 hour trip from the city of Athens and the route to Nemea and Napflion was very picturesque. Alexander made sure I get the best spot to take pictures and he even offer to take my photos. It’s a nice part of the town and you will enjoy the view and the activity. Nemea has nice wines that everyone must try. I recommend to tourist like me to also include this into your itinerary.
