Van half november tot oudejaarsavond veranderen de mooiste pleinen van Wenen in magische kerstmarkten. De uitgebreid verlichte monumentale gebouwen langs de Ring vormen een prachtige achtergrond en de geur van kerstgebak en warme glühwein zorgen voor een heerlijke kerstsfeer. Smul van romig gebak, gekonfijte vruchten, geroosterde kastanjes en kruidige glühwein (gemaakt van wijn, brandewijn of jenever, gezoet met warme vruchtensappen). Bijna overal in de stad treft u kerstkramen in de vorm van kleine huisjes aan en de grootste markt vindt plaats voor het indrukwekkende stadhuis. Kom in de kerstsfeer tijdens deze 2,5 uur durende wandeling over de kerstmarkten van Wenen op de pittoreske pleinen van de stad.

De kunstmarkt aan de voorzijde van de spectaculair verlichte Karlskirche is gevuld met handgemaakte geschenken en traditionele gerechten en omvat ook een speeltuin voor kinderen.
De Stephansdom wordt omgeven door een kerstmarkt die typisch Weense dingen verkoopt, zoals sneeuwbollen. De geur van kerst is overal te vinden.
De Kohlmarkt en Graben maken deel uit van de zogenoemde Gouden Wijk van Wenen. De beroemdste koffiebrander van de stad, Julius Meinl, en de beroemdste banketbakker van de stad, Demel, vallen op tussen alle luxe winkels.
De Heilige Michaëlpoort is de imposantste toegang tot Paleis Hofburg, al meer dan zevenhonderd jaar een centrum van macht.
Hier valt de bekende 'Speckstandl' op: worstjes, ham, spek en hartige hapjes en alle andere heerlijkheden van een rokerij.
De oude Weense kerstmarkt op Freyung is volgens velen de sfeervolste markt in de stad. Het plein wordt omgeven door indrukwekkende familiepaleizen en heeft de charme van een oud marktplein behouden.
De Ferstel Passage is een soort 'culinaire biotoop' waar bijzondere hammen, een Franse mediterrane bistro, ambachtelijke chocolade en alle lekkernijen van een van de beste koffiehuizen van de stad, Café Central, te vinden zijn.
De tour eindigt op de spectaculairste kerstmarkt van Wenen, die zich uitspreidt over het hele gebied en park voor het verlichte stadhuis. Het nabijgelegen Café Landtmann was favoriet bij Sigmund Freud en behoort nog steeds tot de beste cafés wat kwaliteit en service betreft. - U kunt hier gaan uit eten!

Brigitte was such a delight when touring us around the Christmas markets in Vienna. She was very knowledgeable and we appreciated her little tidbits of history throughout the night. She was very engaging and personable. Not many tour guides care to ask for the individual names of their clients, but Brigitte made sure that was the first thing she found out when she met us! She was very patient while we were walking and we aren’t used to walking in Vienna’s winter weather, so it was nice to feel like we weren’t being rushed around. Brigitte is aware that some of Vienna’s sights and happenings are being catered to the increased tourism in the city, so she made sure to show us and bring us to places that exhibited the authenticity of Viennese way of life. Before leaving us for the night, Brigitte made sure to give us specific directions for the quickest route back to our AirBnB where she met us. Would definitely recommend for future tours!!

Travelers should know that this tour is much better and deeper than a simple Christmas Market tour. Walter is a scholarly tour guide who took us to numerous Christmas Markets, big and small; public and remote; old and newer. He shared concepts about Paris architecture, politics, culture, international influences, food, city government and infrastructure. We loved every minute and will book again next year.
