Was nice local food experience and Gaella was super engaging guide. Just found the price way too much even for Kigali. Saw later that NuttinToDo offers same experience for fraction of cost. I’d pay max $35 per person instead of the $75 that we paid.
This tour is best for first-time visitors and solo travelers who value culture, convenience, and safety more than the food itself. If you’re a foodie or a picky eater, this may not meet your expectations. Our guide, Gaella, was excellent — professional, communicative before the tour, very knowledgeable, and genuinely fun to spend time with. She added a lot of value to the experience. A few things to note for future travelers: the food shown in the listing photos was not what we received, the tour lasted just under 3 hours instead of the advertised 4, and while “7 foods” are listed, the stops included 3 food locations, 1 dessert stop, and 1 local drink. For me, the food itself was average and not quite worth the price. However, if you don’t mind paying a premium for the ease, comfort, cultural insight, and having a great local guide, you’ll likely enjoy this experience. While it didn’t fully meet my expectations based on the description, I still had a good time overall and don’t regret doing it.
We live here in Rwanda and have yet to eat any local Rwandan food...until this lovely tour. It was fantastic to experience a new part of Kigali, to walk through the vibrant and busy streets and find some food that we really enjoyed. Even our picky eater daughter enjoyed something at each place. That's hard to do. Well done!
My wife and I have traveled to more than 30 countries together and, during our travels, we have done more than 5 street food tours. In all these years of travelling, this is the only food tour that we regret doing. Here is the reason why: this experience in Kigali was by far the most expensive, especially concerning what you get to eat. Basically, we paid USD 75 per person (USD 150 for two people) to eat rice and beans, meat swekers and fruits. To put it bluntly: the price is extorsive if you take into account the food that was served to us (basic, simple and cheap). It was frustrating and disappointing. The chat with our guide was nice, but, still, for this price range, it is not worth it. Avoid this tour.
With over 98% glowing reviews and features in Condé Nast Traveler, our Jollof'Appétit food tours have become a trusted way to discover Kigali’s flavors and culture. While one guest didn’t find the experience to their taste, we remain grateful for the overwhelming support of travelers who celebrate the authenticity, storytelling, and community connections that make our tours special.
This trip is recommended. We went as a group. Our host Joselito and Chris were amazing. Very informative and hospitable too. it was good to see other parts of Rwanda. I love the culture, the people, the food. I love everything about Rwanda. Will visit again.
So happy you all enjoyed your food walking experience 😊 thank you for this lovely review.
We had an outstanding food tour with Joselyto! We visited 5 different locations for a variety of food and drinks and got to learn a lot about the neighborhood and food in Rwanda as the day went on. This is not fine dining, it's local food with history, culture and a guide taking you to small shops that tourists would not find on their own. You will definitely end up full. Absolutely worth it in our opinion and Joselyto was a fantastic guide!
We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your walking food experience with us. Thanks for the raving review!
Our guide, Yves, was a fantastic guide and we enjoyed sharing stories, asking lots of questions and feasting our way through Nyamirambo. The visits are well paced and Yves has a high standard when selecting the local eateries and dishes. We got to sample different rice dishes, local lake Kivu sardines, fresh sugar cane juice, African tea and fresh fruit. I recommend this tour when visiting Kigali, I actually think it would have fun better on the earlier end of our time in the city, but due to schedules we did this on our last day. Either way it's a great afternoon spent!
Thank you so much for the awesome review Pam. We’re so happy you were delighted with our food tour experience :-)
At pickup time the guide does not shown, she didn’t notify of the booking. And we wait 45 minutes until the guide coming. The guide take us to 5 restaurants in 3 hours to try different food, the foods are normal street foods, and has nothing special, the food itself is 10-20$ together with a 3 hours guide worth maximum 40$, but the tour sold 89$ per person. I rate the value for this tour to 40$
We sincerely apologize for the unfortunate experience you had with our Jollof'Appétit food walking tour. We take full responsibility for the delay in our guide’s arrival, and we understand how this impacted your experience. As we explained during your call, there was an issue with timely notification from Viator, which prevented us from assigning a guide promptly. This is the first time we’ve encountered such a delay, and to avoid this happening again, we are adjusting our booking window to 24 hours, giving us more time to ensure everything is properly arranged. Regarding the meet-up point, we had chosen a restaurant as the starting location, and the tour does include visits to multiple restaurants and these are not street food. Our aim is to provide a well-rounded experience of the local food scene, encompassing both restaurant and street food offerings. On the matter of pricing, we want to clarify that third-party platforms, like Viator, collect a significant portion of the tour fee—almost 30%. We also ensure that our guides are compensated above average, as we value delivering a high-quality experience. Your estimation of what the tour should cost does not account for these factors, and lowering the price would not allow us to operate sustainably while maintaining our standards. We genuinely appreciate your feedback and will use it to improve our services. We hope you’ll give us another opportunity to provide you with the experience we strive for.
I have taken about seven food tours and major cities around the world, and they have been wonderful. This leaves a little to be desired as we both really didn’t care for the food. I guess Rwandan cuisine really did nothing for us on the bright side, the guide, Gaella, was very personable and made everyone feel welcome. She was the bright shining star of the evening for what I paid. I would’ve rather have gone to an upscale hotel somewhere in a hotel.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're truly sorry to hear that the local Rwandan cuisine didn't meet your expectations, especially as many of our guests have shared positive experiences. We're glad to know you enjoyed the guide, and we appreciate your comments. It's important to note that when you booked, we aimed to highlight that our tour focuses on authentic Rwandan cuisine, offering a true taste of the local culture, which may differ from what you would find in a hotel restaurant. We value all feedback and will take your comments into consideration as we continue to refine our offerings. We hope you’ll consider giving us another chance in the future.
Our host Gaella Irakoze made us feel as part of the city scene by taking us to 5 delicious spots to eat local food! It was great to walk to the different venues and see and taste Kigali.
