Begin aan een 3-uur durende, kleine groepstour door Castle Hill, het oudste deel van Boedapest. Ontdek in het gezelschap van een historicus het Buda-kasteel en de omliggende wijk met smalle en geplaveide straatjes vol met barokke en gotische gevels van historische villa's en kerken en de overblijfselen van een synagoge uit de middeleeuwen.

Twee gebouwen vallen op Castle Hill, het oudste deel van Boedapest, bekend om zijn smalle en geplaveide straatjes en zijn barokke en gotische gevels: het massieve en imposante paleis op de zuidpunt van de heuvel en het gekleurde dak van de Matthiaskerk in het midden , met zijn ranke toren naar de hemel.
We beginnen onze tour in het paleis, de oude zetel van koninklijke macht. Het werd herbouwd, uitgebreid, veranderd, afgebrand en opnieuw opgebouwd en het kreeg zijn huidige eclectische uiterlijk pas na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De eerste die op Castle Hill bouwde, was Koning Béla IV. Rond 1250 bouwde hij op deze plek een fort na een verwoestende invasie door Mongoolse hordes. In de Renaissance-periode bereikte koning Matthias aan het einde van de 15e eeuw het beroemdste hof van Europa. Toen kwamen de Turkse paspa's die het land meer dan 150 jaar regeerden, gevolgd door een opeenvolging van Habsburgse keizers.

Het Sándor-paleis is de officiële residentie van de president van Hongarije en de zetel van het kantoor van de president. Het heeft sinds 2003 allebei gediend. Het oorspronkelijke paleis werd gebouwd in neoklassieke stijl in 1806. Het werd gebouwd in opdracht van graaf Vincent Sándor, een aristocraat en een filosoof van het Oostenrijks-Hongaarse rijk.
Een hoogtepunt van de tour is de Matthiaskerk met zijn overvloedig versierde dak en verbazingwekkende interieur. De kerk is een zeer fraai uitgevoerde Neogotische wederopbouwfantasie uit het einde van de 19e eeuw en het is een opvallend mooi gebouw.
Fisherman's Bastion is een architecturale fantasie in neogotische en neoromaanse stijlen die zijn ontworpen en gebouwd tussen 1895 en 1902. De zeven torens vertegenwoordigen de zeven Magyaarse stammen die zich aan het einde van de 9e eeuw in het Karpatenbekken vestigden. Het terras biedt een van de meest beroemde panoramische uitzichten op de Donau, het Margaretha-eiland, Pest en de Gellért-heuvel.
Onze tour eindigt bij de Weense poort, van waaruit je helemaal naar Obuda (oude Boeda) kunt kijken, waar de Romeinen de stad stichtten die toen Aquincum heette.

Last Saturday we did this tour. Led by our guide Eszter. We were the only ones on this tour, so it was a private tour. This allowed Eszter to give all the attention to our questions. Eszter knows a lot about the history and that gave us a good idea of the area and the city. Also nice that we witnessed a historic moment together with her (the road past the residence of the president that had been reopened after 16 years). I can recommend this tour to everyone if you want to know more about Budapest.

Absolutely loved this tour with our tour guide, Kata! She did an amazing job showing us many interesting aspects of the Buda Castle district. This was by far one of the best tours that we took in Budapest! We got great value for our money. Greatly recommend this tour and especially Kata as the tour guide!

Super disappointed with this tour. Really didn't learn much at all, and didn't seem like our tour guide, Valeria was very passionate for what she was doing. She would point to things and more/less say you can go visit these places later. We could hardly hear what she was saying and that's standing close to her. She used a little speaker thing that hung around her neck, but again really couldn't hear. Seems like she also always stopped at places that were noisy to talk (ie, a band playing loudly in the background, church bells going off. Would have been better if she stood elsewhere to deliver what ever she had to say). I felt it was a total waste of our time, and I have been on free walking tours before that have been wonderful. PS. the 2nd sentence out of her mouth when we met her is how we should tip, that was a turn off to address right out of the shoot.

We had a great experience on our walking tour of Buda with Kata. She was full of historical information and blended what we were seeing on our walk with the history of the area. Additionally we visited many sites (e.g. art exhibit, hidden memorials) which we never would have found on our own. Highly recommend.

We had a great walking tour around the Buda Castle district. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and was actually from the Buda district. We were even shown his Grandmother's house and learned the story behind the scene. Very friendly and informative tour. I'd highly recommend it.
