Je maakt kennis met een uniek ander natuurlijk landschap – de sleutel tot wat je ziet ligt onder het oppervlak – een van de meest uitgebreide geothermische systemen in Nieuw-Zeeland, dat zich uitstrekt over 18 - vierkante km. Dit wordt een zeer kleurrijke dag om te onthouden, dus zorg dat je camera's opgeladen en klaar zijn... Terwijl we Tauranga verlaten, duurt onze reis door Wai-o-tapu ongeveer 1,5 uur, dus leun achterover en geniet van de rit, snacks en frisdranken (all-inclusive) terwijl je het prachtige landschap van Aotearoa in je opneemt. Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland, wordt genoemd als "Een van de 20 meest surrealistische plaatsen in de wereld" Duizenden jaren in de maak. Unieke kenmerken zijn de wereldberoemde Champagne Pool natuurlijk gekleurde bronnen, borrelende modder, stomende grond, uitgestrekte vergezichten, enorme vulkanische kraters en sinterterrasformaties. De Lady Knox Geiser barst dagelijks om 10.15 uur uit tot hoogtes tot 20 meter. Het bezoekerscentrum heeft een breed scala aan souvenirs en een café waar u eten, drinken etc. kunt kopen. Tijdens onze ontspannen rit terug naar uw schip heeft u de tijd om de vele foto's van uw dag vol glorieuze kleur te bekijken. We hebben je 2 uur voor je vertrek terug bij je schip in de haven van Tauranga.
ALLEEN DE TIJD TOELAAT : Bekend bij de lokale bevolking gewoon als ‘The Redwoods’, de 55.000ha Whakarewarewa Forest is een speeltuin voor mountainbikers, wandelaars, wandelaars en ruiters te midden van prachtige stands van torenhoge Californische Redwoods, weelderige inheemse bossen en exotische bomen. De Redwood Memorial Grove werd in 1901 aangelegd, ter nagedachtenis aan de mannen van de Nieuw-Zeelandse Forest Service die omkomen in de twee wereldoorlogen. Deze iconische bomen torenen met een hoogte van ongeveer 67 meter boven je uit en bieden ongelooflijke fotomogelijkheden. Deze gemakkelijke korte wandeling beschikt ook over een promenade over een oude thermale vijver, de thuisbasis van unieke waterplanten.
Sulphur Bay ligt aan het zuidelijke uiteinde van het Rotoruameer en is een perfect voorbeeld van de beroemde geothermische omgeving van Rotorua. Het voortdurend veranderende landschap rond de baai heeft alles wat bezoekers van Rotorua zich kunnen wensen. Silica flats, rotsachtige terrassen en zwavel richels zitten naast actieve kokende modderpoelen en stoom vents. Zelfs het water is interessant, de melkachtige kleur is het resultaat van zwaveldeeltjes die in het water zweven. De nabijheid van de baai tot voedselgebieden en de warmte die wordt gegenereerd door de geothermische activiteit, betekent dat het gebied veel inheemse vogels aantrekt. Liefhebbers van vogels kijken kunnen hier ongeveer 60 verschillende soorten spotten, waaronder de gestreepte dotterel, de schorpioen en drie soorten meeuwen in dit beschermde wildreservaat.
ALLEEN TIJD TOELATEN : Mooie en ruime tuinen in de buurt van het centrum van Rotorua. De Government Gardens bieden een bowlingclub, petanque, croquet en een golfbaan. Binnen de tuinen kom je ook verschillende bezienswaardigheden tegen, waaronder het 1927 Arawa Soldiers Memorial, een aantal geothermische kenmerken en de Kwaqiulth Totem Pool. De prachtig onderhouden tuinen zijn een korte wandeling naar Lake Rotorua, het centrum van de stad en het wild toevluchtsoord van Sulphur Bay. Het land is een van legende en historisch belang voor de lokale Maori-bevolking, met een aantal belangrijke veldslagen die hebben plaatsgevonden. De oorspronkelijke Maori-eigenaren schonken de 50 hectare grond aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw ten 'behoeve van de mensen van de wereld'. In de Government Gardens bevinden zich ook het Rotorua Museum , Polynesian Spa en de Blauwe Baden. De gerestaureerde Blauwe Baden bieden de mogelijkheid om te genieten van een duik in het warme water en te ontspannen in een architectonisch prachtig gebouw.

It was interesting to see how a volcano can leave the earth in ways we would never think of. Be ready for the natural sulfur smell. It is very strong. It was nice to experience the natural hot springs by dipping our feet into the water. The California Redwoods were huge. We got to even see how kiwi’s grow. Our guide Greg was awesome. He was very knowledgeable and very personable. He provided snack and water on our trip.

If you only have one day in Tauranga, this is a must do activity. I have seen many geothermal pools around the world, this one has the most colorful spectacular views. Too bad we don’t have enough time to walk in the Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest.

There were two of us booked on this small group tour, however were changed to another tour company (A Day in the Bay) due to no others being booked. We were very happy with the new tour provider as Meg our tour guide was amazing. She was knowledgeable, friendly, professional and extremely funny. The tour exceeded our expectations. We saw so much in such a small amount of time. The Redwood Forest was excellent. We paid an additional $42 to walk in the treetops. The geothermal springs and geyser were exceptional. Definitely worth visiting. An excellent tour, exceptional guide (Meg) and a great day exploring the region.

Unfortunately, the trip was disappointing overall, even if Wai-O-Tapu itself is absolutely worth seeing. According to the description, you should look for a woman with green shoes outside the port exit – but no one was there. After requests we were sent to Tino Pai Tours behind the port exit. Although there was someone standing there wearing a company T-shirt who said he was our driver, we were accused of running too far, although the instructions were unclear. The minibus was very cramped and uncomfortable. With the air conditioning on, the driver could hardly understand, without air conditioning it was extremely hot – like in a sauna. In addition, the driver spoke very quickly and vaguely, so I understood almost nothing. It was particularly disappointing that programme items such as Sulphur Point and the Government Gardens were completely omitted. The driver simply asked briefly if he could continue without explaining that these were official program items and that we had actually about 30 minutes to explore there. Too bad, because Wai-O-Tapu is really impressive in the landscape and absolutely worth a visit – but unfortunately the organization and execution of this trip did not do it justice.

Regarding the meeting point, our staff member wearing green shoes was positioned inside the black shipping container near the port, which was unfortunately bypassed. When the driver escorted you back, your lanyards were provided as planned. We acknowledge, however, that the meeting instructions were not sufficiently clear and will be improving this for future guests. No accusation was intended at any point, and we regret if the interaction was perceived that way. On the day of your tour, temperatures were exceptionally high—the hottest day recorded this year. A brand-new vehicle was used, and the air conditioning was running at full capacity to keep all passengers as comfortable as possible. We are sorry that this affected comfort levels and the audibility of commentary. With regard to the itinerary, the Government Gardens building is currently undergoing earthquake-strengthening work funded last year and is fully covered in white protective material, making it unavailable for viewing. As a result, this stop has been removed from our itinerary until 2028. We regret that this was not communicated more clearly on the day. We are pleased to hear that you found Wai-O-Tapu itself impressive, as it is truly a highlight of the region. We really enjoyed this day visiting a center of Nothern New Zealand island wirh geothermal valley, Rotorua lake and Redwoods. Mud lakes with bubbles are funny, and a view of pine forests mixed with palms will always stay with us! Special thanks to our guide Greg for his care, patience and sense of humor! :)

Nice geothermal park tour. 1 hr 20 minute drive through the countryside to get there but worth it. Park had nice signage and walking trails
