Vogelen rond Kigali is een introductie tot het vogelleven van Oost-Afrika, omdat deze plaatsen een mix zijn van habitats, waaronder grasland, wetlands en meren (vijvers). Vogelen op één (of alle) van de genoemde locaties, is een kennismaking met de vogels van Rwanda en je hebt ook de gelegenheid om zeldzame vogels te zien zoals de witkraagolijfrug, Papyrus Gonolek en Papyrus Kanarie.

We hebben een 3 uur vogelen in Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-toerisme Park voornamelijk om vogels te zien. Nyandungu is een onlangs gerestaureerd wetland binnen Kigali City; het is gelegen in 1,5 km van Kigali International Airport en op slechts 25 minuten rijden van het stadscentrum. Meer dan 100 vogels werden in dit gebied waargenomen, waaronder de witkraagolijfrug, de geelborsttapalis, de dubbeltandbarbet, enz.
Umusambi is een Kinyarwanda naam die Gra-gekroonde Kraanvogel betekent. Het dorp is een nieuw gecreëerd heiligdom om de bevolking van Gra-crown Crane te redden van de illegale handel in huisdieren. Ten behoeve van de bescherming van het gebied komen er meer vogels naar de plek voor voedsel en voortplanting. Veel soorten ijsvogels, zoals ratten, Maleachieten en Afrikaanse Pygmeeën, gebruiken aangelegde watervijvers als voedselbron. We besteden 2 tot 3 uur van de ochtend om rond te toeren door het heiligdom voordat we onze lunchpauze hebben.
In de wetlands van Bugesera, vooral in Gashora wetland, leven papyrus- en watervogelsoorten. Deze plaatsen zijn de thuisbasis van Papyrus Gonolek, Papyrus Canary, Carruther's Cisiticola en zwermen Glossy Ibis. U kunt hier een ochtend of middag doorbrengen om de meest waterrijke vogels van de Oost-Afrikaanse regio te zien.

We had the chance to go on a birding tour in Kigali, and to say it was wonderful is an understatement. Our guide, Joseph, was amazing, so knowledgeable but most of all, incredibly passionate. His love for birds and conservation is truly contagious. We enjoyed spending the day with him and our driver, Alex, so so much. We only wished we had more time to absorb more knowledge. If you like birds, book this tour, you will not regret it. If you don’t like birds, you should also book this tour, I’m sure you’ll like them by the end. I can’t stress enough how amazing Joseph was. We are so happy we found this tour, and honestly can’t wait to come back and go birding with him again. We were able to identify over 60 different species of birds. Thank you so so much, we truly loved it.

The Guide is very knowledgable, he knows all the Bird names by heart, knows where to look for them and points out facts and behaviour. Wonderful landscape, too. Take a raincoat during rain season 🙃 Pick up, drop off and Lunch Break worked well, too.

Claudien proved to be a punctuel and seriously expert birder, equipped with quality binocs and scope and call recordings and deep familiarity with the species of the area. He is flexible and easy company. The urban wetland is perfect for birding: paved pathway cutting through marshes, ponds, and woodlands, litter'free, uncrowded, and secure.

This was an unplanned trip for me whilst at a conference in Kigali. I had an extra day free before heading back home. Claudien made himself available and organized a great day in the wetlands. I cannot recommend Birding and Educational Tours enough! The experience far exceeded my expectations. Claudien’s expertise in identification of local species, and knowledge of where to find them, was invaluable. We managed to see 69 different species including some rare sightings. Booking was easy, the tour started on time, lunch was lovely, and the birding locations were excellent. As a solo female traveler, I felt safe throughout. It was also wonderful to have the opportunity to support a local business. Claudien went above and beyond to ensure I was able to get the most from the experience.

I had a great time with Claudien, a knowledgeable and academically-trained birdwatcher. I saw about 40 species of birds in a day in large part due to his expertise. I would happily choose other tours with this team.
