De tour begint bij White Point Garden, waar de kolonisten in 1680 landden. Daar hoor je hoe Charleston ontstond. Een geschenk aan 8 Lord Proprietors van koning Charles II. U ziet het Stevens Lather House, met een oppervlakte van 17.000 m², het op een na grootste huis in Charleston. In 1920 richtten de goede mensen van Charleston de Society for the Preservation of Old Dwellings op in de balzaal van dat huis. Het was de allereerste natuurbehoudsvereniging van het land.
Terwijl we langs de hoge batterij (waterkant) wandelen, leer je over de burgeroorlog en de revolutionaire oorlog. Je hoort over de Slag om Battery Wagner, onderwerp van de film ‘Glory’ en nog veel meer over de Burgeroorlog. Je ziet enkele van de mooiste vooroorlogse huizen van Charleston en hoort enkele 'insider'-verhalen over het oude Charleston. Zoals het 900 stuks kanon dat in 1864 op het dak van het Roper House landde en daar nog steeds staat. Je ziet de Carolina Yaughtless Club, Rainbow Row en nog veel meer.
Zodra we Tradd Street bereiken, lopen we door wat de oorspronkelijke ommuurde stad was. We zullen enkele van de vroegste grote huizen van Charleston uit de jaren 1740 en 1750 zien. Tradd Street, met zijn prachtige bloembakken, wordt beschouwd als een van de meest charmante straten van Charleston en wordt vaak vermeld in Southern Living Magazine. We zullen Catfish Row zien (Church Street tussen Tradd Street en Broad Street), de zwarte wijk in Charleston vóór de burgeroorlog en het onderwerp van het toneelstuk Porgy and Bess.
Vervolgens naar de Ontmoetingsstraat. George Williams bouwde het landhuis na de burgeroorlog in wat de Italiaanse architectuurstijl wordt genoemd. Williams was een blokkadebreker tijdens de burgeroorlog. Margaret Mitchell (auteur van Gone with The Wind) bezocht het huis toen ze 13 jaar oud was en we denken dat dat bezoek mogelijk de oorsprong van haar boek is geweest.

He will take you on a slow-paced tour talking about Charleston's beginnings, pointing out unique stories of houses, war history items, and will gladly answer any questions that you might have. I traveled with my mom and her friend to Charleston for the first time in early October. A friend recommended Mike's tour and we were not disappointed! He gave us many amazing historical facts about the area and brought a personal touch to each of his stories. He had first hand knowledge of several of the local homes and the people that lived in them. Due to the inclement weather, we had to reschedule our original tour. Mike was very accommodating and communicated clearly throughout the process. I would definitely recommend Mike to anyone wanting an interesting, factual tour of Charleston!
This is our second time touring the city with Mike. The first time was two years ago when we visited the city with friends. Everyone had a great time and was very impressed with his knowledge of historical Charleston. This week we returned to the city with family and Mike’s walking tour was a number one must do for our family. Mike shared many interesting facts about Charleston and did a great job giving us new information since two of us had taken his tour in the past. The tour is about two hours long and is well worth your time. We recommend his tour to all of our friends.
The sight seeing tour with Mike was good, he has a lot to tell and knows his stuff. Being a member of the historical society he knows everything from brick walls and roof tiles, historici buildings and the people living in it. He has a good sense of humor and last but not least: a great recommendation for a restaurant for that same evening, The Chubby fish of chef James London great choice, worth the waiting in line!
