Eenmaal aangekomen in Berat begint uw reis bij het legendarische kasteel van Berat, een fort dat dateert uit de 4e eeuw voor Christus. Gelegen op een heuvel met een prachtig uitzicht over de hele vallei, is het kasteel niet alleen een monument - het is een van de weinige nog bewoonde forten ter wereld. Terwijl je de stenen paden verkent, ontdek je hoe Berat drie keer werd binnengevallen door de Ottomanen, Romeinen en Bulgaren, voordat het een machtig vorstendom werd onder de adellijke Muzaka-familie in de 14e eeuw. Uw wandeling gaat verder naar het Onufri Iconography Museum, gevestigd in de prachtig gerenoveerde 18e-eeuwse kathedraal van de Hemelvaart van Saint Mary. Na het kasteel leidt de tour u naar het hart van de stad — de traditionele wijken van Mangalem en Gorica. Verbonden door de elegante Gorica brug over de rivier de Osum, zijn deze wijken beroemd om hun witte Ottomaanse huizen, perfect gestapeld op de heuvel, waardoor Berat zijn bijnaam kreeg: De stad van de duizend ramen.

Vertrek om 9:00 uur naar Berat en je wordt ongeveer 2,5 - 3 uur overgebracht naar deze prachtige stad. Dit is een van de oudste en de trots van de Albanese architectuur. De drie belangrijkste buurten van de oude stad zijn Mangalemi, Gorica en Kala, waar het kasteel zelf zich bevindt.

Berat Castle is one of the most important historical and cultural monuments in Albania. Built on a high hill, it offers a stunning view of the city and the Osumi River. The castle has a history that dates back to antiquity, but was strengthened and took its present form during the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Inside it are old churches, characteristic houses and cobblestone alleys, which still preserve the spirit of past centuries. It is a living testament to Albanian history and heritage

We took a private one-day tour to Berat from Saranda with Mariglen. He was very punctual and we left promptly at 8am. Mariglen was thoughtful, kind and considerate. He looked after us all day and accommodated all our needs. The day was long but it really worth the trip as Berat is stunning, and it gives you a break from the crowds and heat of Saranda. The price included breakfast in the beautiful Tepelene and audioguides in the Iconography Museum in Berat. Really recomended tour agency and a great guide experience with Mariglen!

The main attraction of Berat, the castle is definitely worth the walk up for amazing views over the area. Make sure to walk around the perimeter so you can see all the viewpoints including the byzantine church.
