Welkom in Rajarata ! (Het Koningsgraafschap of Het Land der Koningen) We beginnen onze dag vanuit het Vessagiriya Forest Monastery, een van de twee oudste boeddhistische monniken die op het eiland wonen. In Vessagiriya beginnen de gasten diep te duiken in de oude Singalese beschaving, gevoed met boeddhisme, landbouw, schone kunsten, architectuur, ambachten, internationale betrekkingen en wonderen van spreuken en daar krijg je een idee van hoe Anuradhapura er vanaf het allereerste begin uitzag in zijn gouden tijdperk.
Verborgen op de zijkant van een rotswand in de Ran Masu Uyana (Het Koninklijke Goudvis Park) ingeklemd tussen de Tissa Wewa en de Isurumuniya Rotstempel in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka is een uniek artefact van het oude Sri Lanka dat plaatselijk bekend staat als "Bawa Chakraya" of de "Sakwala Chakraya.
De Sri Maha Bodhiboom of De Heilige Bodhiboom (Een Vijg of Pipalboom wetenschappelijk bekend als de Ficus Religiosa) wordt beschouwd als de eerste van de acht heilige plaatsen in Anuradhapura. Dit is de rechtervleugeltak van de Sri Maha Bodhi Boom in Bodh Gaya in India waaronder de Ascetische Siddhartha Verlichting bereikte, en werd door keizer Ashoka gestuurd via zijn geliefde dochter, de boeddhistische non Theri Sanghamitta, op verzoek van de Singalese koning Devanampiyatissa in de 3e eeuw v.Chr. Vanaf dit punt werd het vereerd door opeenvolgende koningen, monniken, nonnen en de lekenboeddhisten omdat het een levende verbinding is met de Gautama Boeddha. In het bijzonder wordt algemeen aangenomen dat het de oudste menselijke geplante levende boom ter wereld zou zijn met de langste geschreven verslagen en momenteel bijna 2300 jaar oud.
In het noorden of de Heilige Bodhiboom kunnen we getuige zijn van een enorme verzameling staande granieten pilaren die is geïdentificeerd als het vervallen gebouw van het oude Brazen paleis dat ooit diende als het administratieve centrum van het oude Maha Vihara kloostercomplex gebouwd onder leiding van Grote Koning Gamini Abhaya in de 2e eeuw v.Chr., een kleinzoon van Koning Devanampiyatissa. Het was een gebouw van negen verdiepingen met 1000 verschillende kamers. De naam Brazen Palce is afgeleid van het feit dat het dak was rietgedekt met koperen tegels.
Ruwanveliseya stoepa ook bekend als de Ratnamali of als de Mahathupa (Th Grote Stupa) werd gebouwd onder leiding van de Grote Soort Gamini Abhaya in de tweede eeuw voor Christus. De kronieken beschrijven fantastisch de inhuldigingsceremonie van deze Stupa als groot festival dat werd gehouden in Anuradhapura met de deelname van uitgenodigde gasten, zelfs uit andere landen als diplomaten. Het werd echter vernietigd tijdens Chola Invasie door 10e eeuw na Christus en werd de stoepa in zijn oorspronkelijke glorie hersteld in de 12e eeuw na Christus door Koning Parakkramabahu de grootste. Wat we vandaag de dag in ieder geval zien is de meest recente gerestaureerde vorm die in 1940 door Ratnamali Stupa Development Society werd voltooid, wat eerst door Ven werd geïnitieerd. Naranvita Sumanasara Thero in 1873 omdat hij het in zijn oude glorie wilde herstellen.
Dit pittoreske paar vijvers gebouwd op de lage grond zijn ongetwijfeld prachtige exemplaren van landschapsarchitectuur en natuurlijk een prachtig hydraulisch systeem dat niet alleen de talenten maar het esthetische gevoel van deze prachtige mensen toont.
Dit is eigenlijk zoiets als een modern stoombad, maar dit was niet alleen om te genieten van stoombaden met warm water, maar van een goed ontwikkeld singalees medicijn dat presteerde in de 4e eeuw na Christus. Daar kunnen we bespreken hoe het functioneerde en hoe zieke monniken in Abhayagiriya University hun huidziekten genas.
Daar zien we opnieuw een grote granieten trog in de vorm van kanostandaards met een verbazingwekkende diepgang in het reftergebouw van het Abhayagiriya-klooster. De Chinese monnik Fa-hsien die studeerde aan de Abhayagiriya Universiteit in de 5e eeuw na Christus registreerde dat er 5000 boeddhistische monniken in het klooster waren en deze specifieke trog kon voldoende rijst bevatten voor een dergelijk aantal.
Dit is een van de mooiste kunstwerken in Sri Lanka dateert uit ongeveer de 8e eeuw na Christus. En dit meesterwerk laat op kostbare wijze het esthetische gevoel van de oude ambachtslieden zien en hoe ongelooflijk ze hun kennis, vaardigheden, talenten, gevoelens in de praktijk hebben gebracht.
Dit is in de volksmond bekend als de Eth-Pokuna bij de lokale bevolking of de Elephant Pond in het Engels, gelegen ten zuidwesten van de Refectory is misschien wel de grootste door mensen gemaakte vijver in Azië die werd gebouwd in de 3e eeuw na Christus. Er wordt gezegd dat dit drie keer groter is dan een modern Olympisch zwembad. Het wonder hier is niet alleen zijn enorme omvang, maar ook de ondergrondse leidingen die nog steeds functioneren en water naar de vijver hebben geleverd vanuit nabijgelegen reservoirs en in de zuidwestelijke hoek kunnen we een cisternesluis opmerken die suggereert dat het water werd verdeeld naar andere relatief kleinere vijvers in de omgeving die de uitstekende waterbouwkundige vaardigheden van de oude Singalezen uitbeelden.
De maansteen is een andere mooiste en adembenemende creatie van de oude beeldhouwer. Het dient als een deurmat aan de voet van een trap naar een boeddhistisch heiligdom, maar de beeldhouwer transformeert het in een kunstwerk bij uitstek.

We had a very nice morning with Lucky! Our son of 1.5 years came with us and therefore some flexibility was needed from Lucky. That was no problem at all! Lucky has a lot of knowledge and is extremely enthusiastic. I also found his realistic and down-to-earth view of Buddhism fascinating. He is absolutely recommended as a tour guide!

Lucky took us through the most interesting monastries and ruïnes and told passionatly about budhism and it’s history. Lucky had been a guide since 12 years and knows a lot about Budhism. Overall is was a very fun experience and I learned a lot from Lucky!

I had an outstanding guided tour in Anuradhapura and can highly recommend it. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the history of the ancient city. His understanding of archaeology, architecture, and Buddhist philosophy was impressive, and he explained everything in a structured, engaging way.
