De oude Aya Sofya, in het Engels vaak Hagia Sophia genoemd en een van de meest iconische en blijvende monumenten van Istanbul, bijna 15 eeuwen oud, is met een recent decreet van de Turkse president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan van een museum omgebouwd tot een moskee. Het gebouw is sinds 1934 geclassificeerd als museum na een verklaring van Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, de eerste Turkse president en oprichter van de Republiek Turkije. De structuur, beschouwd als een juweel van de Byzantijnse architectuur, werd oorspronkelijk gebouwd als een kathedraal in 537 CE door de Romeinse keizer Justinianus I. Aya Sofya had ook een bijna vijf-eeuwse periode als moskee toen de Ottomanen Istanbul veroverden, toen Constantinopel genoemd, in 1453 en het gebouw omgebouwd tot een religieuze ruimte voor moslims.
Het meest fotogenieke gebouw van Istanbul was het grootse project van Sultan Ahmet I (r 1603-1617), wiens tombe zich aan de noordkant van het terrein bevindt en uitkijkt op het Sultanahmet-park. De prachtig gewelfde buitenkant van de moskee heeft een waterval van koepels en zes slanke minaretten. Blauwe İznik-tegels sieren het interieur en geven het gebouw zijn onofficiële maar veelgebruikte naam.
De Byzantijnse keizers hielden van niets meer dan een middagje wagenrennen, en deze rechthoekige arena naast het Sultanahmet-park was hun favoriete locatie. In zijn hoogtijdagen werd het versierd met obelisken en standbeelden, waarvan sommige nog steeds op hun plaats staan. Het is de afgelopen jaren opnieuw aangelegd en is een van de populairste ontmoetingsplaatsen en promenades van de stad.
Topkapı is het onderwerp van kleurrijkere verhalen dan de meeste musea ter wereld bij elkaar. Libidineuze sultans, ambitieuze hovelingen, mooie concubines en sluwe eunuchen woonden en werkten hier tussen de 15e en 19e eeuw toen het het hof van het Ottomaanse rijk was. Een bezoek aan de weelderige paviljoens van het paleis, de met juwelen gevulde schatkamer en de uitgestrekte harem geven een fascinerend kijkje in hun leven.
De kleurrijke en chaotische Grand Bazaar is het hart van de oude stad van Istanbul en is dat al eeuwenlang. Begonnen als een klein gewelfd bedesten (magazijn) gebouwd in opdracht van Mehmet de Veroveraar in 1461, groeide het uit tot een uitgestrekt gebied toen lanen tussen de bedesten, naburige winkels en hans (karavanserais) werden overdekt en de markt de uitgestrekte, labyrintische vorm aannam die het vandaag behoudt.

Unfortunately, this tour did not live up to expectations, especially considering the high cost. I actually learned more about Turkish culture and history on a food tour I took than on this one. Our guide rushed us through each stop, often speed walking without giving us time to truly take in the sites or snap photos. Despite knowing I was pregnant, he made no effort to adjust the pace. I often found myself 20–40 feet behind the group of 3 of us, and he never once checked in or acknowledged it. Lunch was another disappointing moment. Not only did he choose an expensive restaurant, but he also allowed us to cover his meal without offering to pay us back—or even saying thank you. Overall, the experience felt impersonal and awkward. We did our best to remain positive: we made small talk, bought him a drink, and my husband even insisted on leaving a tip. But in the end, it felt like our presence and experience didn’t matter to the guide at all. This was especially disheartening because every other part of our visit to Istanbul has been truly wonderful. Sadly, this tour was the one real letdown.

Tour guide was late and creepy towards my female friend, made the time uncomfortable and the information provided went barely beyond placards near key areas. Would not book again or recommend would rather use the free audio tour materials provided at the pavilion.

The Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia were amazing! Our guide was 1 1/2 hour late on picking us up! I lost 2 hours of sleep!

Like most Viator tours I have done in foreign countries, the driver was late to pick up (30 minutes), but once we finally started, everything went smoothly. Beza is a friendly guide and informative. Full day tour, and I saw what I wanted to see.
