Welkom op het grootste open zeeplein van Europa (12280 vierkante meter!). Het plein is zo mooi dat het de moeite waard zou zijn om alleen al naar Triëst te komen om het te zien. Maar er wachten ons nog veel meer attracties!
Een oude Romeinse poort die waarschijnlijk dateert uit de 1e eeuw na Christus, geopend in de oude muren van het Romeinse Tergeste, gebouwd door Augustus in 33 voor Christus.
Deze staat op de top van de heuvel met dezelfde naam, die al de acropolis van de Romeinse stad Tergeste was en waarschijnlijk de plek van een heilig gebied. Het huidige gebouw, met vijf schepen, is het resultaat van de vereniging, in het begin van de 14e eeuw, van twee afzonderlijke religieuze complexen.
Het kasteel van San Giusto, een van de meest representatieve symbolen van de stad, staat op de heuvel met dezelfde naam en kijkt uit over de stad, de golf en het achterland. Het toegangskaartje (niet inbegrepen) kost €6: als je wilt genieten van een prachtig uitzicht over de golf is het de moeite waard!
Het Romeinse theater in Triëst ligt aan de voet van de heuvel San Giusto, in het hart van de stad, aan de rand van het historische gebied.
In de 19e eeuw was dit gebied het economische hart van Triëst. Vandaag de dag is het een elegant plein met een aantal interessante gebouwen en een aantal interessante feiten waar ik je meer over zal vertellen!
Verbazingwekkend gebouw in het centrum van de stad. De kerk van St. Spiridione is gebouwd in de vorm van een Grieks kruis, een weerspiegeling van de Byzantijnse stijl van oosterse kerken en heeft een centrale koepel die hoger is dan de vier klokkentorens.
De kerk wordt gewoonlijk 'Sant'Antonio Nuovo' genoemd en ontleent zijn naam aan een eerdere kerk uit het midden van de 18e eeuw. De nieuwe kerk werd gebouwd tussen 1828 en 1849 en werd geïnspireerd door de klassieke grootsheid van belangrijke Romeinse monumenten.
Het Canal Grande, 370 meter lang en 28 meter breed, is een symbool van de stad: een wandeling langs de oevers is een must!
Een loopbrug over de zee van meer dan 200 meter, een magische plek om te wandelen en jezelf van zuurstof te voorzien op elk moment van de dag, in elk seizoen, en je te laten betoveren door de zonsondergang in de herfst wanneer de paleizen van de Rive rood kleuren, of als je een echte waaghals bent, de bora met 100 km/u te trotseren om de top van de windroos te bereiken en te kijken of je kunt blijven staan!

Matteo is an excellent guide. The explanation was very thorough, providing detailed historical information, curiosities, and various details about the attractions of the place, including places to eat. The Viator application needs improvement because I was unable to connect directly to the link, not even allowing me to copy the address. Therefore, I had to search for the address multiple times on the internet, writing everything by hand and always entering the same data. Inconvenient while on the go! Sonia.
This was an excellent walking tour of Trieste, lots of interesting places to visit, plenty of historical information but not so much that you felt overloaded. You could go at your own pace so there was never a feeling of being rushed. It was easy to download and was great value for money. I would definitely recommend this tour.
This is the first time we used a self guided audio tour. On the whole, it was better than nothing but I probably wouldnt use this one again. The information given was done using an AI voice , there was no variation in tone of voice or speed which made it difficult to understand. There was a complete lack of stories that you would normally have during an in person walking tour and as such it felt like information overload.

However, with this option (which costs less than a pizza 🍕), you get: 👉🏻a pre-written and tested itinerary 👉🏻info on the main monuments and their curiosities 👉🏻info on typical dishes and local restaurants 👉🏻the flexibility to take the tour at your own pace. It was great to see many interesting things at a personal pace and receive descriptions of great interest.
We unexpectedly found ourselves in Trieste as our cruise itinerary was changed last minute so we went on Viator to look for walking tours and found this one. Very informative with both print as well as audio options and we got to see alot. Only recommendation-advise in Viator that this is a Self guided tour (no actual person/guide) AND thar you can start at any time. When we booked that wasn’t made clear. The link that is sent to download is a little cumbersome (could use a little clearer explanation) but once we started it was great! After the tour we took a bus (less than 2 Euros each way) to see Grotto Gigante about 25 mins up the mountain which was well worthwhile!
We were not impressed with the Trieste self guided tour we did. The company had obviously hired an American to read the script about Trieste, and it was just awful. Clearly the guy knew nothing about Trieste, and his pronunciation of all of the Italian locations in the tour was embarrassing. He could not even say Trieste properly. Any Italian listening would have been appalled.
