Ponte Fabricio, ook bekend als de Brug van de Vier Hoofden, is de oudste brug in Rome die nog steeds zijn oorspronkelijke structuur behoudt. Het werd gebouwd in 62 v.Chr. Op het eiland Tiber stond tijdens de Romeinse tijd de Tempel van Aesculapius. Volgens de legende brak er in 293 v.Chr. een ernstige plaag uit in Rome, waardoor de Senaat een tempel bouwde gewijd aan de Griekse god van de geneeskunde, Asclepius, die bekend stond onder zijn Latijnse naam Aesculapius. Asclepius (Grieks) of Aesculapius (Latijn) is een figuur uit de Griekse en Romeinse mythologie. Hij werd de god van de geneeskunde, diep vereerd door het volk voor zijn vriendelijkheid tegenover de zieken.
Vanaf Etta Ristorante (eerste halte), gelegen aan Piazza in Piscinula, komt u in een gebied waarvan de naam komt van de aanwezigheid van oude Romeinse thermale baden met zwembaden (“piscinula” is een verkleinwoord). In het verleden stond Rome vol met dergelijke baden, waarvan velen hun namen gaven aan verschillende buurten. Dit is het enige plein waar de naam bleef. Met uitzicht op dit magische plein, met zijn middeleeuwse charme, zijn de 15e-eeuwse Mattei Huizen, gebouwd door het opnemen van 14e-eeuwse gebouwen die al behoorde tot de Mattei familie.
Vanaf Piazza in Piscinula bereikt u het Huis van Dante, dat in meer dan honderd jaar geschiedenis een van de meest prestigieuze en actieve onderzoekscentra van Dante in Italië en in het buitenland is geworden.
Je komt dan aan bij Vicolo del Moro, een kameleon-achtige straat, met de mogelijkheid om te transformeren tussen dag en nacht. De wandeling wordt verrijkt door lokale winkels en ambachtslieden. 'S Nachts wordt het gebied een van de meest levendige delen van het nachtleven van Rome. Na slechts een paar stappen wordt u omarmd door het aroma van versgebakken brood van bakkerij La Renella, een van de oudste in Rome.
U komt uiteindelijk aan op Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, het oude hart van Trastevere. Het plein wordt gedomineerd door de Basiliek van Santa Maria in Trastevere, waaraan het zijn naam ontleent. Het werd gesticht in 217 AD door paus Callixtus. De 13e-eeuwse mozaïeken op de gevel van de kerk zijn werkelijk spectaculair. Het plein is ook de thuisbasis van een fontein beschouwd als de oudste in Rome, omdat het werd gebouwd op dezelfde plaats waar al een fontein stond tijdens de tijd van keizer Augustus. Rondom het plein, rechts van de basiliek, staat het Huis van de Kanunniken van Santa Maria; links het Palazzo San Callisto, het Palazzo Cavalieri (gebouwd in de 16e eeuw) en het 17e-eeuwse Palazzo Pizzirani.

Evening Food tour of trastevere with guide Robbie. He was excellent and took us to several restaurants must were in quaint cobbled lanes with rich history and tradition for making local delicacies. A great experience with a wonderful and entertaining guide, Rocio. Rocio was very knowledgeable and shared interesting information and history during the walking food tour and let us sample tasty local foods. By the end of the tour we had eaten enough not to need any dinner. I would highly recommend this activity, especially with Rocio as a guide. The walk which about 2 - 3 hours was easy, requiring just navigating the cobblestones as the greatest challenge.

This was our second Secret Foods Tour, with the first one being in Paris. And for sure, this Trastevere tour did not disappoint. Robbie, our guide, has been living in Tome and knew many of the ins and outs on history and the local food scene. Trastevere has many restaurants and eateries to choose from and we certainly hit the high notes on this tour. From marinated Roman artichosetved with rocket and mozzarella, to Enzo’s stuffed zucchini leaves battered a d fried, amazing Suppli, hrough cacio e Pepe, and rigatoni all'Amatriciana, authentic slow roasted porchetta and a whipped cream in a brioche and finally, some excellent gelato. We explored and experienced authentic Roman foods that were fresh and very flavorful. If you’re seeking to digest Rome in a fun and exciting way, this gastronomy tour is well worth your time and money. From our experience, these tours can sell out quickly. What could be better than eating your way through one of Rome’s oldest neighborhoods?
