Mtscheta is een van de oudste steden van Georgië in de buurt van Tbilisi. Mtskheta was de hoofdstad van het vroege Georgische koninkrijk Iberia van de 3e eeuw voor Christus tot de 5e eeuw na Christus. Hier accepteerden Georgiërs het christendom in 317. Het Jvari-klooster is een Georgisch-orthodox klooster uit de 6e eeuw in de buurt van Mtskheta. De grote kerk vertegenwoordigt het hoogtepunt van de architecturale typologie. Het is een waar architectonisch meesterwerk uit de vroege middeleeuwen met uitzicht op de samenvloeiing van de rivieren Aragvi en Mtkvari vanaf de top van de heuvel. De Svetitskhoveli-kathedraal werd gebouwd in de 11e eeuw, hoewel de site zelf nog ouder is en dateert uit het begin van de 4e eeuw. Het monument heeft een langwerpig kruis dat de lucht lijkt te raken. De kathedraal is het op een na grootste kerkgebouw in Georgië en staat op de UNESCO-lijst. Het Samtavro-kloostercomplex werd gebouwd in de 11e eeuw. Het bevat het graf van koningin Nana en Mirian III, de koning van Iberia, die het christendom als de officiële religie in Georgië heeft ingesteld.

I really enjoyed this tour to Mtskheta, the old capital of Georgia. It was a beautiful and peaceful trip, and the place feels very special with its rich history and amazing views. The churches and historic sites were impressive, especially Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The tour was well organized, comfortable, and not too tiring. Our tour guide, Nino, was wonderful — very friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about Georgian history and culture. She made the experience even more interesting and enjoyable.
