Het glinsterende water van het Titicacameer, 's werelds hoogst bevaarbare meer, is een van de onmisbare attracties in Peru. Het grenst aan de grens tussen Peru en Bolivia. Het "Puma-vormige meer" is verspreid over meer dan 8372 km, het meer is de thuisbasis van enkele traditionele lokale gemeenschappen die onaangetast zijn door moderniteit. Tijdens deze tour van een halve dag vanuit Puno bezoek je de meest gefotografeerde en prominente door de mens gemaakte drijvende eilanden van Uros die volledig zijn gemaakt van tatora-riet. Totora-riet werd eeuwen geleden voor het eerst gebruikt om deze eilanden op het Titicacameer te bouwen door de Uro-Aymara-families die hun huis op het meer maakten. De boten van de lokale bevolking zijn ook gemaakt van totorariet en ze gebruiken deze schepen om te vissen. Zelfs een deel van het handwerk van de eilandbewoners is gemaakt van totorariet en de vriendelijke mensen van deze gemeenschap bieden hun werk aan bezoekers aan als souvenir van hun bezoek aan deze magische plek.

Je epische Uros Floating Island Tour begint met een transfer naar de bootpier waar je aan boord gaat van een boottocht van 25 minuten om het leven op de drijvende eilanden van Uros te zien. Als je begint weg te zeilen, krijg je een ongerept uitzicht op de besneeuwde toppen van de Andes op een afstand. Terwijl we de kusten van de Uros-eilanden bereiken, zullen de lokale bevolking u hartelijk verwelkomen en u kennis laten maken met hun leven op dit kunstmatige eiland. De mensen hier spreken Aymara, onze gids zal je een paar woordjes leren zodat je ze in hun taal kunt begroeten. Het hoofd van de gemeenschap zal demonstreren hoe ze deze eilanden bouwen en zal de geschiedenis ervan delen. Indien gewenst kun je hier wat souvenirs kopen. De lokale bevolking biedt dan een korte rit aan op hun totora-rietboot naar het hoofdeiland Uros (hiervoor geldt een toeslag). Je hebt wat vrije tijd om rond te slenteren, het eiland is ook gemaakt van totorariet. Als je eenmaal genoeg hebt gehad van de geschiedenis en uitzichten, beginnen we aan een reis terug naar Puno.

It was a half day tour and it was well organized by the provider. I visited Uros islands, learned about culture and how they make floating islands using Totora reef and then we had a small additional ride (optional) at an additional cost of 20 soles on traditional puma reed boat and it was so beautiful. Local Aymara people does rely on tourism, textiles and boat tours for their livelihood.

An absolutely gorgeous natural gem in South America, Lake Titicaca offers a truly unique experience, especially with a visit to the Uros Islands. Sitting at an altitude of around 3,800 meters above sea level, the lake is vast and breathtaking. While the islands are now well developed for tourism, they remain fascinating and culturally enriching. The experience is deeply educational, offering insights into the traditions and lifestyle of the local people. The food is a highlight especially the ceviche and the local Puteada tea is highly recommended. Prices for food and drinks are quite reasonable, making the visit even more enjoyable. It’s a wonderful destination and definitely not to be missed.

It was a wonderful island experience, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to visit. Amazing tour to the floating islands with Abel! Everything was perfect, pickup was ontime and Abel the guide was friendly and informative. Yes, it was a bit touristy but guess this is the prime source of income for the island dwellers. The tour company was exceptionally nice, all entrance fees and transportation were arranged and i was contacted the night before with detailed pockup information.
