Een dagtrip vanuit Athene om Thermopylae en Delphi te zien is een onvergetelijke ervaring. Deze dagtour begint door vanuit Athene naar het noorden te rijden, we komen aan bij Thermopylae, de historische pas van Thermopylae waar de strijd plaatsvond tussen de Perzen en Spartanen. Onze volgende stop is de heilige plaats van Delphi met zijn tempel van Apollo. Delphi is een door UNESCO erkende archeologische vindplaats die tot de meest iconische plaatsen van Griekenland behoort. Treed in de voetsporen van oude helden op het platteland van Griekenland op een avontuur dat je meeneemt naar het hart van dit Europese land.

Ophalen van Athene en ongeveer twee en een half uur rijden om onze eerste stop te bereiken.
Leonidas was een koning van de Griekse stadstaat Sparta, en de 17e van de Agiad-linie, een dynastie die afstamde van de mythologische halfgod Heracles en Cadmus. Leonidas was de zoon van koning Anaxandridas II. Hij volgde zijn halfbroer koning Cleomenes I op de troon op in 489 voor Christus. Leonidas had een opmerkelijke deelname aan de Tweede Perzische Oorlog, waar hij de geallieerde Griekse troepen naar een laatste stand leidde in de Slag bij Thermopylae (480 v.Chr.) terwijl hij probeerde de pas te verdedigen tegen het binnenvallende Perzische leger; hij stierf tijdens de slag en ging de mythe binnen als de leider van de 300 Spartanen. Terwijl de Grieken deze strijd verloren, waren ze in staat om de Perzische indringers in het volgende jaar te verdrijven.
Naast het monument van Leonidas, in het historische Thermopylae, ligt het innovatieve museum van de gemeente Lamia, gewijd aan de slag van 480 voor Christus die de loop van de Griekse geschiedenis veranderde.
De slag bij Thermopylae werd uitgevochten tussen een alliantie van oude Griekse stadstaten, geleid door koning Leonidas I van Sparta, en het Achaemenidische rijk van Xerxes I. Het werd gevochten in 480 voor Christus in de loop van drie dagen, tijdens de tweede Perzische invasie van Griekenland.

De Tholos van Delphi is een van de oude bouwwerken van het heiligdom van Athena Pronaia in Delphi. De cirkelvormige tempel, een tholos, deelt de directe locatie met andere oude fundamenten van de tempel van Athena Pronaia, allemaal gelegen op minder dan een mijl ten oosten van de belangrijkste ruïnes van Delphi, in de moderne Griekse regionale eenheid Phocis. De tholos maakt deel uit van het UNESCO-werelderfgoed Delphi.
Delphi Archeologisch Museum is een van de belangrijkste musea van Griekenland en een van de meest bezochte. Het wordt beheerd door het Griekse Ministerie van Cultuur. Opgericht in 1903, is het verschillende keren herschikt en herbergt het de ontdekkingen die zijn gedaan in het Pan-Helleense heiligdom van Delphi, dat dateert uit de Late Helladische (Myceense) periode tot het vroege Byzantijnse tijdperk. Georganiseerd in veertien kamers op twee niveaus, toont het museum voornamelijk standbeelden, waaronder de beroemde wagenmenner van Delphi, architecturale elementen, zoals de fries van de Siphnian Treasury, en ex-voto's gewijd aan het heiligdom van Pythische Apollo, zoals de Sfinx van Naxos.
De tempel van Apollo, god van muziek, harmonie, licht, genezing en orakels nam de belangrijkste en meest prominente positie in in het Delphic Panhellenic Sanctuary. Het gebouw met de gedeeltelijk gerestaureerde zuilengalerij die vandaag zichtbaar is, dateert uit de 20e eeuw voor Christus en volgens oude verslagen werden in de loop van de geschiedenis vijf verschillende tempels gebouwd. Het beroemde orakel, de Pythia, opereerde in de tempel, de locatie die volgens een traditie werd gekozen vanwege een heilige kloof onder de plaats die dampen uitstraalde, die door de Pythia werden ingeademd.

Chris was truly wonderful. He was a great driver with lots of great insights and Greek knowledge. I loved this trip and would do it again. The car was comfortable and clean. The sites were amazing. He stopped several times for us to take pictures. We ate lunch in the town of Delphi in a small local restaurant with delicious food. It was truly an unforgettable experience. It was a beautiful and very significant and perfect day for us. The first stop was the Thermopylae, which was very emotional for my husband and me. If one is interested in Greek history, the Thermopylae and the King Leonidas monument are simply a must-see. Unfortunately, the historical significance is often portrayed as less important to the uninformed, which is not the case at all. Therefore, it was all the more important for us that when we traveled to Delphi, the Thermopylae were a must. After that, we went to the museum in Delphi. It was truly indescribable and very, very interesting. It is definitely worth a visit. Following the visit to the museum, one can view the temple ruins. Our driver Chris was very friendly, helpful, and drove us safely and comfortably. We felt completely comfortable and very safe. For that, we extend our heartfelt thanks once again. We can highly recommend everything.

Nikos was a great guide! Safe and efficient driver, gave us lots of great info to learn on the trip. Thermopylae is a short stop- and that’s all it needs to be. This was an excellent experience to Delphi. George Remoundos was our driver, and he did an excellent job of making us feel safe and welcome. I appreciated the insights given, including recommendations for dinner after our tour concluded. The pace for our tour was perfect, and never felt rushed. The lunch location was beautiful, delicious, and a good value. I traveled with my wife and two teenage boys, and we all had a wonderful time. Would recommend getting out of the city to experience the countryside, and this was a pleasant means of doing so.
