Leonidas was een koning van de Griekse stadstaat Sparta, en de 17e van de Agiadische linie, een dynastie die afstamming claimde van de mythologische halfgod Heracles en Cadmus. Leonidas was de zoon van koning Anaxandridas II. Hij volgde zijn halfbroer koning Cleomenes I op de troon in 489 v.Chr. Leonidas had een opmerkelijke deelname aan de Tweede Perzische Oorlog, waar hij de geallieerde Griekse troepen tot een laatste stand leidde in de Slag bij Thermopylae (480 v.Chr.) terwijl hij probeerde de pas te verdedigen tegen het binnenvallende Perzische leger; hij stierf in de slag en kwam in de mythe als de leider van de 300 Spartanen. Terwijl de Grieken deze slag verloren, konden ze de Perzische indringers in het volgende jaar verdrijven.
Naast het monument van Leonidas, in de historische Thermopylae, ligt het innovatieve museum van de gemeente Lamia, gewijd aan de 480 v.Chr. slag die de loop van de Griekse geschiedenis veranderde. Een wetenschappelijk project van de Stichting van de Helleense Wereld, het Centrum voor Historische Informatie van Thermopylae opende zijn deuren voor het publiek in 2010. Het gebouw, in de vorm van een eeuwenoude speerpunt die naar het noorden is gedraaid alsof het naar de indringers is gericht, wordt gekenmerkt door zijn ergonomische ontwerp dat van toepassing is op de meest actuele museologische doeleinden en is voorzien van glazen panelen die veel natuurlijk licht binnenlaten. Het Centrum vertegenwoordigt geschiedenis als een interactief verhaal en discours: In de drie tentoonstellingszalen - Leonidas, Dienekes en Thermopylae geheten - bieden multimediatoepassingen bezoekers een virtuele reis naar de tijd en slagvelden van de Perzische Oorlogen, zoals verteld door de oude historicus Herodotus, terwijl de slag bij Thermopylae tot leven komt in een digitale 3D-film.
De Slag bij Thermopylae oorlog werd uitgevoerd in 480BC onder de Grieken en de Perzen op hetzelfde moment dat de Zeeslag bij Artemision plaatsvond. Begin september leidde het Perzische leger mijn Xerxis bereikt de doorgangen van Thermopylae. De Grieken hebben deze strategische plek gekozen om de Perzische aanval het hoofd te bieden. Xerxis heeft Leonides, de leider van het Griekse leger, bevolen zijn wapenarsenaal in te leveren, maar hij antwoordde: 'Kom ze halen'. Twee opeenvolgende dagen vochten de Grieken heldhaftig. De derde dag verraadt Efialtes de Grieken en wijst de Perzen de doorgang om zo bij de achterkant van de Grieken te komen. Het Perzische leger omsingelt de Grieken. Leonides blijft op de plaats van de slag samen met 300 Spartanen, 700 Thespieis en 400 Thivaious, trouw aan zijn vaderlandwetten. Hij valt dood door Perzische pijlen.
Kamena Vourla is een badplaats in de buurt van Athene. Het weelderige groene landschap en de prachtige stranden zullen u betoveren. U vindt er ook verschillende restaurants en cafés.
De Thermen van Thermopylae liggen op 15 km. van de stad Lamia. Het gebied is bekend van de Slag bij Thermopylae tussen de Grieken en de Perzen in 480 v.Chr. Naast de weg staat het standbeeld van Leonidas en de heilige heuvel, waar Leonidas viel tijdens gevechten met de 300 Spartanen en de 700 Thespenen. Volgens de mythologie creëerde Hephaestus, op verzoek van de godin Athena, de bronnen zodat Hercules zich kon wassen en op krachten kon komen na zijn inspanningen.

Great experience with our guide, Nikos. He was very knowledgeable and personable. The Thermopylae site is undergoing improvements but completely accessible and apparently easier to navigate than in the past. The experience was incredible and honestly surreal. The museum admission was very affordable, and the trip itself was exactly the right length. The atmosphere there was amazing — you could really feel the history around you. A great experience for those interested on military history. There were two of us in the group and th driver engaged with us sharing his knowledge about Thermopyle and the battles that preceded and followed it. He also described points of interest along the way. The museum is small and fee, which wasn't included was 3 Euros, so no issue, but have the correct amount ready. The lunch stop was a great spot, with amazing views of the Aegean and nearby islands. Excellent for enthusiasts.

It's difficult to review this fairly. Our driver was pleasant, friendly and helpful, and an excellent, safe driver. However, Thermopylae itself is not a good day out. The 'museum' has almost nothing in it bar a 3D film explaining the battle quite well - for an extra EU3 each! The two monuments are impressive, but other than that, there is nothing to see at the battlefield site. The hot springs 'spa' is just a hydrothermal spring and waterfall. As it was the middle of winter we did not bring our swimming gear, but there was plenty of time had we wanted to sit in the hot sulphurous water
