De Mysore Silk-tour vanuit Bangalore neemt ons mee terug naar 1792, toen het verhaal van Mysore Silk begon met het opzetten van zijderupsenkwekerijen door Tipu Sultan. In 1912 richtte Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV de Mysore Silk Weaving-fabriek op om de industriële productie van Mysore Silk op gang te brengen. We bezoeken de grootste veilingmarkt voor zijdecocons van Azië, de Mysore Silk weaving-fabriek, het Mysore Palace en een oude bazaar. Deze tour wordt georganiseerd door Five Senses Tours, een besloten vennootschap erkend door het Ministerie van Toerisme en lid van de Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). De tour is ontworpen om lokale middelen van bestaan te ondersteunen door middel van het inhuren van lokale gidsen en het ondersteunen van lokale bedrijven in lijn met de missie van het bedrijf om ervoor te zorgen dat reisdollars blijven waar ze worden uitgegeven.

We gaan naar Ramnagaram, een klein stadje op 50 km van Bangalore. Het jaar was 1780 toen Tipu Sultan, de heerser van Mysore, Silk ontving als een geschenk van een ambassadeur van de Qing-dynastie in China. Gefascineerd door deze magische stof, stuurde Tipu afgezanten naar Bengalen en China om meer te weten te komen en richtte uiteindelijk 22 Silk Breeding-stations op die de Mysore Silk-revolutie in gang zetten. Ramnagaram is vandaag beroemd om zijn zijde-industrie en ontvangt elke dag 50 ton zijdecocons, waardoor het de grootste zijdecoconemarkt van Azië is. We zullen de Government Silk Cocoon Market bezoeken en als we geluk hebben, kunnen we zelfs getuige zijn van een veiling!
De volgende fillip voor Mysore Silk kwam in 1912 toen Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV 32 elektrische weefgetouwen uit Zwitserland kocht en de Mysore Silk Weaving-fabriek opzette. In de loop der jaren heeft de fabriek niet alleen de koninklijke familie bekleed, maar ook parachutes gemaakt voor het Britse leger tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog! De fabriek is zelfs vandaag nog operationeel en we zullen hem bezoeken. Het is een fascinerende ervaring om het proces van de productie van zijde te zien, van het spoelen van cocon tot het weven van zijdestof. We bezoeken de fabriekshowroom om een verbazingwekkende collectie Silk Sarees te zien, het eindproduct van de Silk Weaving-fabriek in Mysore. Silk Sarees zijn een cultureel icoon in Zuid-India. Deze sari's variëren in lengte van 6-9 meter en worden door vrouwen gedragen tijdens gunstige gelegenheden zoals een bruiloft of een verjaardag.
Het grote Mysore Palace is onze volgende bestemming. We zullen teruggaan naar het gouden tijdperk van Mysore Maharajas om de glorie te bedenken die Mysore was, belichaamd door dit wonder gebouwd in Indo-Saraceense stijl met een mix van hindoeïstische, moslim-, Rajput- en gotische architectuurstijlen. Het paleis is een stenen bouwwerk met drie verdiepingen, met marmeren koepels en een toren met vijf verdiepingen van 145 voet.
Vervolgens bezoeken we tijdens onze tour naar Mysore de Devraja-markt, de charmante oude bazaar van Mysore. Het is een sensorisch genot bestaande uit bloemen, groenten, fruit, rietsuiker, uien en aardappelen, gepofte rijst en kokosnoten!

A great trip for those who are interested in silk manufacturing as well as visiting the palace. We went to the silk market, which is Asia’s largest silk cocoon market. After that we went to the old silk factory, which is still operational even today and have the full cycle process of Silk production from reeling of cocoon to the weaving of silk fabric. Then the Mysore palace with a private guide, and the local market.

This tour and tour guide were AMAZING! Diwakar spent the whole day with me and I felt like I saw and learned so much - about Mysore, silk weaving, Indian history and culture - truly everything. It is hard to pick a favorite part of the experience; I think it is a toss up between the once-in-a-lifetime banana leaf lunch, the amazingly beautiful Mysore Palace, the electrifying Mysore marketplace, and the buzzing weaving factory. Do not hesitate to book this trip and soak in every last minute of it! Bonus note: As a solo female traveler experiencing India for the first time, I was a bit nervous going into this. I am so grateful that Diwakar was a perfect blend of respectful and friendly, helping navigate numerous unique experiences with expertise, compassion, and context. I felt both secure and empowered throughout the whole experience!
Impressive and informative visit to a huge silk cocoon market and a government silk factory. (Know before you go: you must check all your personal belongings before entering the factory) Amazing to see how the silk comes off the cocoons, and all the steps in the weaving process. Did some sightseeing highlights of Mysuru and bought some unfamiliar but delicious fruit in the market. Lunch was wonderful. Great day for people who are interested in understanding how things are made.

It was a very good experience. Got a lot of input on Mysore Silk and it's history. We got to learn about a lot. How it is made, how it becomes a silk from a cocoon.

I enjoyed the trip and it was informative and at the same time I enjoyed alot we visited 4 place in one day I never thought that can explore 4 places in one day and gain knowledge about all the places like from cocoon to hills it's was memorable day
