Colombo is een belangrijke haven van de Indische Oceaan en ligt aan de westkust van het eiland, net ten zuiden van de Kelani-rivier. Het grootste deel van de internationale handel van Sri Lanka vindt daar plaats, dat een van de grootste kunstmatige havens ter wereld heeft. Bezoek tijdens deze rondreis de meest bekende bezienswaardigheden in de hoofdstad van Sri Lanka om er meer over te weten te komen. Colombo is de bekendste van Sri Lanka. Het werd iets meer dan 120 jaar geleden gebouwd en is gewijd aan het boeddhisme. De tempel wordt geroemd om zijn weelderige architectuur en standbeelden die Sri Lankaanse, Chinese, Thaise, Birmese en andere artistieke stijlen tentoonspreiden.
De architectuur is Indo-Saraceens, met granaatappelvormige koepels. Maar het meest bijzondere is dat elke steen rood of wit is geverfd en in contrasterende ontwerpen is gebruikt. (Photo Stop)
Viharamahadevi Park of formeel bekend als het Victoria-park is het grootste, oudste en kleurrijkste park in het hart van Colombo. Het is een perfecte plek om te ontspannen, voor schaduwrijke wandelingen, picknicks en vooral een geweldige plek om uw tijd door te brengen met uw gezin.
Independence Square ligt in de prestigieuze wijk Cinnamon Gardens in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Het ontleent zijn naam aan de Independence Memorial Hall die daar is gebouwd om de onafhankelijkheid van Sri Lanka van de Britse overheersing in 1948 te herdenken. Dicht bij het plein ligt de Arcade, een modern winkelcentrum dat is gehuisvest in voormalige koloniale overheidsgebouwen.
Pettah is een van de oudste wijken van Colombo. Het is de meest etnisch gemengde plaats van het land. Grote religieuze gebouwen vertegenwoordigen een overvloed aan religies, terwijl meer aardse bezigheden te vinden zijn in marktkraampjes en winkels. De drukte in Pettah kan overweldigend worden tijdens de ochtend- en middagspits.
De spoorlijn werd meer dan 150 jaar geleden aangelegd door de Britten. De oude Fort-regio van Colombo is een van de drukste delen van de stad. In 1877 werd de Kustspoorlijn aangelegd en toen werd het eerste station geopend. De Central Terminus bevond zich destijds op een plaats in de buurt van Maradana. De locatie is nog steeds te zien aangezien het nu dienst doet als het Sri Lanka Railway Museum.
St Anthony's Church is een monument van liefde en toewijding aan St. Anthony opgevoed door iedereen, rijk en arm, in Colombo, evenals in heel Ceylon. Moge Anthony deze stad en dit eiland en al zijn vromen en minnaars daarin beschermen.
De Sri Ponnambala-waneswaram-tempel is een van Sri Lanka's mooiste voorbeelden van Dravidische architectuur. Deze tempel in Kotahena, ten noordoosten van Pettah, is gebouwd van Zuid-Indiaas graniet. Het is opgedragen aan de hindoegod Shiva; hoewel het niet te oud is, is het nog steeds een weergaloos voorbeeld van oude Dravidan-architectuur.
Het nieuwe gebouw voor het secretariaat, de raadzaal en de regeringskantoren wordt later dit jaar in Colombo opgeleverd. Het zal het huidige gebouw vervangen, dat werd gebouwd tijdens het Britse koloniale tijdperk.
De Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall is een van de belangrijkste congrescentra op het eiland. BMICH heeft meer dan 16.000 vierkante voet vloeroppervlak. De bouw van dit congrescentrum was een gezamenlijk project van Sri Lankaanse en Chinese arbeiders.
Sri Lankanen kopen kunst om hun huizen, hotels, kantoren en als cadeau te versieren. De straatartiesten van Nelum Pokuna hebben hun steentje bijgedragen aan dit streven. Voor toeristen om mee naar huis te nemen, is een schilderij met een lokaal thema het beste aandenken.
De vuurtoren is een van de weinige vuurtorens uit het koloniale tijdperk die tot op heden nog steeds operationeel is. De d in de vuurtoren werd in gebruik genomen zodat de werknemer in dat deel van Colombo stipter kan zijn, aangezien persoonlijke horloges destijds niet door iedereen konden worden betaald.
De toren werd in het begin van de 20e eeuw gebouwd door een Parsi (afkomstig uit Bombay) familie met de naam Khan. De vier verdiepingen hoge toren staat daar tot op de dag van vandaag op een aangelegde rotonde. De waterfontein die eraan vastzit, werkt al lang niet meer, maar de klokkentoren blijft functioneren.
De tempel van Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil is een van de mooiste en lieflijkste attractieplekken van Sri Lanka. Er zijn veel mooie en elegante schilderijen van God en Godin. Ook zijn er prachtige gravures van een astrologiekaart. Het binnendak van deze tempel is versierd met prachtige schilderijen. Er wordt gezegd dat de tempel van Sri Kailawanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil de oudste hindoetempels in Colombo is.

This 3-4h drives around the city was very good. The driver ( I think his name was Pravin)was so kind and patient also very good photographer.. Overall i enjoyed the short tour.
We really had a great time. Chathu our driver took us to interesting places and explained everything. Great tour!
It was booked last minute and was a good insight of Colombo. Managed to see quite a bit by driving around and also stopping off at places. Some of the places of worship have set visiting times so be mindful of that. Easy to contact via WhatsApp.
Driver was not very engaged and didn’t give us much commentary. We did see as much as we wanted to see but didn’t enjoy our driver
The tour was efficient in terms of time used. My guide was courteous, helpful and knowledgeable about the city and its history. It was time well spent, about two hours with little time wasted

We saw a lot of Colombo in a few hours in a late model mini bus with air con. Driver was very good and with good English. However at end it was a bit difficult to get to any markets for shopping so we just visited one Brand shop as a friend wanted Ceylon Tea. All in all great value. They met us at the ship. Dropped us off at Port gate on return and we took shuttle buses from there to the ship The hlghlight was the Buddhist temple and also Colombo was very very tidy and all be it a lot of old infrastructure littering was not evident. We did it our own. It was a 6 nights and 7 days family tour of Sri Lanka. We were 5 (4 adults and 1 baby<2). Airport to airport taxi for the whole journey was amazing! The spacious taxi was full of comfort and convenience. It was dedicated to us 24x7 with an English speaking guide cum driver! We covered Colombo, Trincomalee, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Elia, Ella, Yala, Bentota with comfortable stay at different places managed by our own. The guide facilitated us with best of Indian food at various places of stay. The beaches, the mountains, the places of religious importance and the visit of Yala National Park were superb.

I guess I was expecting a tour with a guide who explained the history of Colombo. I had a driver who pointed out buildings, many which had the use on a sign. I visited an interesting temple but the driver didn’t compute to explain the significance so I am still unaware of its significance. Visiting a park was of little value when the explanation was this is where families come on the weekends. The three hour “tour” was completed in under two hours including the late arrival of the driver. I noted that other tourists had their guide explaining the places where we stopped. It was poor value for what I received.
