Op de Speakeasy Sagas Pub Crawl loop je door de straten waar dranksmokkelaars federale agenten ontweken, geheime bars zoemden achter Vergrendelde deuren. Tijdens de drooglegging werd alcohol verboden, maar in Charleston hield het feest nooit echt op. Dit was niet alleen een stad met zuidelijke charme en torens. Het was een stad van verborgen kamers, rumrunners en wetsdienaren die gemakshalve de andere kant op keken. Van elegante societyschandalen tot ruige criminaliteit aan het water, deze tour onthult het onvertelde verhaal van Charlestons wilde kant. Hoewel de Sint-Filipskerk vooral bekend staat om zijn torenhoge toren en heilige geschiedenis, speelde ze een rustigere rol tijdens de drooglegging – als een geruchtmakend uitkijkpunt en ontmoetingsplaats in de ondergrondse wereld van dranksmokkelaars en achterkamertjesdeals in de Heilige Stad. Op een steenworp afstand van waar de wet matigheid predikte, fluisterde de lokale bevolking over verborgen voorraadjes en geheime slokjes. In een stad waar heilige ontmoetingen met schandalen plaatsvonden, stond St. Philip’s op het kruispunt van geloof, folklore en verboden geesten.
High Cotton, een prachtig gerestaureerd voormalig bankgebouw in de historische wijk van Charleston, is waar elegantie, rijkdom en rebellie ooit botsten. Deze bezienswaardigheid is vernoemd naar de zuidelijke uitdrukking “leven op hoog katoen” en weerspiegelt de welvaart van Charlestons katoenhandelstijdperk en de weelderige levensstijl van de elite van de stad. Maar onder de verfijnde sfeer schuilt een meer controversieel verhaal. Lokale legende verbindt het gebouw met de vurige gematigdheidsactivist Carry A. Nation, beroemd om het bestormen van saloons met een strijdbijl tijdens haar kruistocht tegen alcohol in de vroege jaren 1900.

A must read hen visiting Charleston
One very cool speakeasy, but the other two places we stopped at are just normal bars. Kendall was very knowledgeable and friendly the entire time. She did a wonderful job on our tour.

The Secret Bars were Hidden
Our guide was really good. She had some great insight and historical references regarding prohibition. Expected my backroom, secret bars that we didnt go to.
