What a great experience....

What a great experience. We were shown around all parts of Soweto from the shanty town, past Mandela’s House to the more affluent parts. We swung past the Soweto Towers and enjoyed a lunch on Vilakazi Street. The guide Mulalo was informative, chatty and we had lots of laughs. A really enjoyable couple of hours spent.

Extraordinary. A rich, comprehensive tour.

Mulalo, born in Soweto, took us to all of Soweto, from the rich folks on the hill to the poor folks by the train tracks; from the street side bars to the designer streetwear. All with an informed, inclusive perspective. I can’t recommend this enough. And if you’re worried: Soweto in the tuktuk felt very safe, and Sowetans are happy to share their stories in their own way. Come along!

Quality personalized tour of Soweto

The tour of Soweto via Tuk-Tuk was clearly far superior to a standard tour of a dozen or more people led by a guide who herds people onto and off a bus. There are only two people and a guide on a Tuk-Tuk. Our guide was knowledgeable and very friendly. My wife and I had the opportunity to ask as many questions as we wanted. We had three stops, one at the site of the June 1976 student uprising, with explanations provided by our guide. The second stop was at Nelson Mandela’s house with a brief tour provided by a local guide. We also stopped for photos at the cooling towers that are now art exhibits. We dispensed with stops at Desmond Tutu’s residence and for lunch. The guide adjusted seamlessly to our change requests. We then had more time to drive through the different neighborhoods of Soweto. The only downside is that a Tuk-Tuk is noisy, and we had to lean forward to hear the guide/driver (and at times he had to repeat himself).

Wonderful

We spent three very intersting hours on the tuk tuk with Mulalo. He drives you around Soweto explaining the story and the life in that area. I think this is the best way to live such experience.

Tour guide Mulalo Mphuma was great!

Riding through Soweto in a tuk tuk with Mulalo Mphuma was a thrilling and eye-opening experience. He took us deep into the heart of the township, showing the contrast between neighborhoods and sharing powerful stories—including his own journey through the Kliptown Youth Program. Along the way, he even taught us about the local “cheese boys and girls”—can’t wait to drop that lingo back home! We wrapped up near Mandela’s house, grabbed some great finds from local vendors, and enjoyed a delicious township lunch. An unforgettable, high-energy way to experience the real Soweto!

Interesting day learning about the difficult history of South Africa

They picked us up at friends' houses in Pretoria, to go first to the Apartheid museum and then to visit Soweto (Desmond Tutu's house, Mandela's house, Petersen memorial). Our guide was fantastic, explaining everything clearly and patiently! Even during the typical (although simple) lunch.
