Kathakali wordt gevormd in het einde van de 16e eeuw en het is een vorm van ritueel dansdrama. Deze klassieke kunstvorm is voortgekomen uit de oude kunstvormen die Krishnattom en Ramanattom worden genoemd. Kathakali betekent "verhalen vertellen door pantomime". De acteurs spreken niet - de uitvoeringen zijn volledig gebaseerd op gezichtsuitdrukkingen, bewegingen en gebaren van de acteurs. Het aanbrengen van de make-up Kathakali is een langzame transformatie van de acteurs van sterfelijke wezens naar onsterfelijke godheden en demonen. Deze metamorfose vindt plaats voor het publiek en duurt ongeveer 2-3 uur totdat de acteurs volledig zijn gekostumeerd en geschilderd. (minimaal 2 personen vereist. It was an interesting experience. As others have said, don't go too early. The actual performance is only 20min. It is good but not for everyone.

Watching a Kathakali show was an unforgettable experience and a wonderful introduction to Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. The performers were incredibly skilled, with powerful facial expressions, precise hand gestures (mudras), and stunningly elaborate costumes and makeup. Even without understanding the language, the storytelling was clear and emotionally engaging, thanks to the expressive acting and live traditional music. The explanations given before or during the performance really helped in understanding the meaning behind the gestures and characters, making the experience even more enjoyable. The dedication, discipline, and artistry of the performers were truly impressive. If you are visiting Kerala, this is a must-see cultural experience. Thoroughly enjoyed the show. The actors and musician were superb, I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was also wonderful seeing the transformation as they put their makeup on.

Be sure to look, preferably be there 1 hour beforehand to watch the make-up. Super great experience and absolutely impressive. Room is air conditioned, preferably take a light scarf or cardigan. Water (sealed bottle) is quite cheap to buy.
