Nadat ik je heb opgehaald bij je hotel in Brasov, rijden we ongeveer anderhalf uur naar Viscri terwijl ik je kennis laat maken met het begin van de Roemeense geschiedenis. Het eerste bezoek is aan Viscri, een charmant dorpje dat afgelegen ligt in een landelijke omgeving van Transsylvanië. Het werd oorspronkelijk opgericht door de Székelys, de vroegste kolonisten van Transsylvanië, en zag later een toestroom van Saksische kolonisten in de 12e en 13e eeuw. Het dorp is de thuisbasis van de iconische Viscri versterkte kerk, een UNESCO World Heritage Site, en een van de bekendste in Roemenië.
Op een halfuur rijden van Viscri is onze volgende stop het fort Sighişoara. Dit historische juweeltje, gelegen in het hart van Transsylvanië, staat op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO en neemt u met zijn kleurrijke gebouwen, geplaveide straatjes en goed bewaard gebleven 14e-eeuwse architectuur mee terug in de tijd. Sighișoara, de thuisbasis van de iconische klokkentoren, is de plaats waar Vlad de Spietser zijn eerste levensjaren doorbracht. Verken de middeleeuwse citadel, dwaal door de betoverende pleinen en voel de echo's van eeuwenoude verhalen. Het fort straalt een tijdloze schoonheid uit die elke bezoeker boeit, waardoor het een must-see bestemming is voor geschiedenisliefhebbers en mensen die op zoek zijn naar een magische reis door het verleden.
Op de terugweg vanuit Sighisoara stoppen we bij Rupea Fortress. Ook al is dit geen UNESCO-gezicht zoals de andere twee die we zojuist hebben bezocht, het is de moeite waard. Dit juweeltje werd gebouwd door de Transsylvanische Saksen en werd al in 1324 gedocumenteerd. Het Rupea-fort staat trots op een 120 meter hoge basaltklif ten westen van de stad Rupea. Dit middeleeuwse bolwerk had in de 14e eeuw een aanzienlijk strategisch belang en diende als een essentieel knooppunt dat Transsylvanië, Moldavië en Walachije met elkaar verbond. Vanaf Rupea Fortress rijden we ongeveer een uur terug en sluiten we deze tour af bij je hotel in Brasov.

Adrian was a knowledgeable guide, giving us detailed historical information on the sites we visited. He was comfortable to be with. He is a good driver in a comfortable vehicle.
We had such a lovely day with Adrian. He was so knowledgeable- I now know more about medieval Transylvania and Vlad the Impaler than I will ever remember, and we also got a sense of the modern politics of Romania. He was very alert to any pace difficulties and adjusted accordingly and even spotted when food was needed. These places are stupendous and we couldn’t have seen them with a more fabulous guide/companion.

Adrian is very knowledgeable, clearly has a passion for his country's history and is so engaging. He was flexible with my planning and requests. The first fort was interesting but the highñights were the two UNESCO cities. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. I highly, highly recommend taking this tour with Adrian of you are at all interested in learning about the country you are visiting!
It was a really lovely experience. I was amazed by the amount of information that Adrian posesed about history of Transylvania and the passion that he speaks with. He is an incredible and patient guide, he showed us so many interesting things that it would have impossible for us to know. This tour was so great! I love that it was private- as in just my husband and myself with our guide, Adrian! It was a long day but so worth it. Adrian is so knowledgeable, and it’s impressive how much information he shared with us off the top of his head. We had great weather the day we went, so the views we had from up top at each of our stops were spectacular. Our guide was very personable, and when he wasn’t sharing historical information, we engaged in great conversations throughout the day, which made it even better- as if we were spending the day with a new friend who was showing us around a country we had never visited before. We also had a great lunch all together in the afternoon, so that was a nice break. My husband and I are so fascinated with Romania, and even more so now and can’t wait to go back and see/learn more!

Adrian’s depth of knowledge and love of his country’s history made this a truly memorable experience. My wife and I have been on many group tours which just can’t compare to the personalization Adrian was able to accommodate us with since this was a very specialized “private” tour. We visited 3 historical sites, one of which is a UNESCO site, and when taken together they really explained the history of Transylvania and its importance on the world stage and enormous global events that continue to shape our common history.
