Deze iconische weg brengt ons naar de top van een berg van 14.000 voet die al tientallen jaren tot de verbeelding spreekt. Onderweg hebben we volop mogelijkheden voor een geweldig uitzicht op de bergen, evenals een paar wandelpaden voor meer gevorderde wandelaars. Opmerking : De tour is meer dan 18 mijl lang, met meer dan 29 audio verhalen, en duurt ongeveer 1 - 2 uur te voltooien. Nieuw, Levenslang toegang, geen vervaldatum. Reizigers stoppen hier al sinds 1890! Deze observatieplaats was ooit een halte langs de tandradbaan. We komen wat later in de tour terug op de geschiedenis van de spoorlijn, maar in 1890 konden toeristen dankzij deze rit genieten van het uitzicht en zich aanpassen aan de grote hoogte.
Dat is Crystal Creek Reservoir, een betrouwbare bron van drinkwater voor alle inwoners van Colorado Springs. Het is echter niet alleen moeder natuur die helpt om al dat water te leveren. Menselijke innovatie helpt ook.
Er zijn hier nog twee grote stuwmeren die water leveren voor de mensen in deze regio. De andere twee zijn het North Catamount en het South Catamount Reservoir.
De naam is een beetje misleidend, want we zijn nog niet helemaal halverwege de berg. Er is een kleine parkeerplaats als we hier even willen stoppen voor een korte pauze.
We zijn halverwege de top van de piek! Dat weten we want het Glen Cove Visitor Center komt er snel aan. Het is al tientallen jaren een belangrijke stop en halverwege marker voor reizigers.
Op iets meer dan 10 mijl kan dit moeilijke pad enkele uren duren. Maar hier is een tip: Je hoeft niet alles te lopen om een geweldig uitzicht te krijgen op de noordwand van Pikes Peak.
Er zijn hier geen glijbanen en schommels. In plaats daarvan is dit kale landschap een plek waar bliksemschichten over het terrein springen en dansen tijdens onweer.
Gooi wat stenen over de richel en sommigen beweren dat ze nooit geluid maken. Maar wetenschappers verzekeren ons dat er een bodem in de bodemloze put zit.
Een van de populairste wandelroutes blijft tot op de dag van vandaag. Het heet de Barr Trail. De oorsprong ervan gaat terug tot de tijd van de goudkoorts, hoewel het niet het goed onderhouden pad was dat het vandaag de dag is.

It was interesting, but when each section started, the narrator would talk for 10 secs., it would stop and then restart. It did that for each section.

We purchased the ticket online to skip the wait at the visitor center, which saved a lot of time! The Pikes Peak Highway Driving Tour was exactly what we needed—just an audio guide, so we could enjoy the drive at our own pace without any pressure. The ticket price included a car load of friends for admission into the park for $16.99. At the entrance to Pikes Peak we were required to pay again, they had never heard of Viator. We paid $34.00 to enter the park. I’ve requested a refund hopefully it will be honored.

I thought this was tickets. It wasn’t. I got to the booth, and they are like, you need to buy. You need to really put boldly, this won’t get you in the park. I guess a few others had the same experience. Basically I wasted $16.99, and got nothing.
