400 jaar geleden kwamen de eerste VOC-schepen terug in Holland gevuld met het Chinese blauw-witte porselein. Dit porselein werd erg populair onder welvarende gezinnen zoals de Europese koninklijke families. Toen de import van Chinees porselein daalde als gevolg van burgeroorlogen in China, namen Nederlandse pottenbakkerijen de kans waar en ontwikkelden een eigen versie van dit blauw-witte porselein. Dit heeft geleid tot de geboorte van Delfts Blauw in Nederland. Tegenwoordig is Delfts Blauw een typisch Nederlands product.

Van de ongeveer 32 pottenbakkerijen die in de 17e eeuw werden gesticht, is Royal Delft, opgericht in 1653, de enige overgebleven Delftsblauwe fabriek in Delft. Het is een nationaal erfgoed en een must-see wanneer je Nederland bezoekt! Hier is het beroemde Koninklijke Delfts Blauw nog volledig handgeschilderd volgens eeuwenoude traditie. In 1919 kreeg het bedrijf het voorvoegsel 'Royal' toegewezen, waarmee de bijzondere relatie met het Nederlandse koningshuis werd bevestigd. Generaties lang was de Koninklijke familie echte bewonderaars van Royal Delfts Blauw. Tegenwoordig is Royal Delft niet alleen een fabriek voor Delfts Blauw en een kennisinstituut voor keramiek, maar ook een museum. Bij een bezoek aan Royal Delft ontdek je de complete geschiedenis en het productieproces van Delft Blue en Royal Delft in een audiovisuele presentatie. Je bent getuige van een schilder op het werk en maakt kennis met de andere twee iconen van Delft in de themakamers: de eetzaal van Johannes Vermeer, de beroemde 17de-eeuwse Delftse schilder en de Koninklijke kamers met de collectie Oranje Keramiek die is geproduceerd over de eeuwen voor het Nederlandse koningshuis. In het museum kunt u de verzameling antieke en moderne stukken Delfts blauw aardewerk bewonderen en in de fabriek kunt u getuige zijn van het authentieke productieproces. In de showroom is een uitgebreide collectie handbeschilderd aardewerk van Royal Delft en een verzameling souvenirs te zien. Royal Delft biedt workshops waarin je Delfts blauw kunt schilderen. Uitkijkend over de prachtige binnenplaats serveert de Brasserie heerlijke koffie, thee, lunches en High Teas. Rondleidingen zijn beschikbaar in verschillende talen.

We were visiting The Netherlands to see old friends and decided on the Saturday to venture into Delft. It seemed an obvious choice to pay for tickets into the museum. I used an audio guide whilst other members of our party were happy to wander around reading the information boards which were in Dutch and English. The museum gives you a very good insight into how the Delft pottery came to be and traces its history across the ages. There are some really lovely examples of the porcelain to view along with examples of tile work.
It was a a great visit. We were five people and everybody found their interest point, Some the art, some the craftsmanship, some the industry and some the history. this factory museum shows off all aspects of the famous delft ceramics. It is a one and a half hour visit. We did not take a tour (because there wasn't one on the day we were there) but it is very self explanatory. The price is like any museum but there is free parking. Don't miss the inner courtyard.
Small museum and then took guided factory tour which was ok. 6 Euro shuttle back to station via city centre was the highlight.

This was interesting and I’m glad that I went, but it wasn’t necessarily a highlight of my trip. The garden bistro was charming. The museum itself is very small. I do wish that participating in classes was more accessible for day of purchase. I was sad to miss that option.

Total Delft is a procelain manufacturer located in the surroundings of Delft, a town in South Holland Region, in the Netherlands. We came here to visit this place and we could learn about the history of this manufacturing site and its relation with the Netherlands Monarchy. Really, very interesting explanations. Also, we could see a lot of porcelain objects, especially tableware. And you can go to the manufacturing site and see the real place (not only a museum). At the end of the museum, there is a shop, where you can buy a lot of porcelain objects. Very nice.
