Stap in het hart van het oude Athene met deze wandeltocht met kleine groepen die filosofie, geschiedenis en politiek combineert. We brengen de grote vragen van Griekse denkers tot leven terwijl we door de straten dwalen waar ze ooit rondzwierven. Wat zorgt ervoor dat mensen gedijen en zich voldaan voelen? Hoe bevorderen verschillende regeringsvormen geluk, en wat is de link tussen democratie en de intellectuele roes van het oude Athene? We zullen deze vragen onderzoeken aan de hand van de ideeën van Socrates, Plato, Aristoteles en de Stoïcijnen, allemaal afgezet tegen beroemde Atheense bezienswaardigheden. Meet and greet bij het Standbeeld van Theseus, tegenover het metrostation Thiseion. U wordt opgewacht door onze tour Leider die u welkom heet op de tour, de route uitlegt en eventuele vragen beantwoordt. Je leert ook over Theseus, de mythische stichter van Athene, wiens avonturen de oude Atheners inspireerden en ontzag gaven.
Wandel in de voetsporen van Socrates terwijl we het gebied rond de oude Agora verkennen, waar handelaren hun waren verkochten en filosofen debatteerden over vragen over ethiek, politiek en het goede leven.
Bekijk de prachtige Poort van Athena en leer meer over de Stoïcijnen, die zowel een slaaf (Epictetus) als een keizer (Marcus Aurelius) onder hun gelederen roemden en deugd, veerkracht, wilskracht en gendergelijkheid predikten. Op dit punt zullen we ook een andere bekende bezienswaardigheid zien, de Toren van de Winden, met zijn prachtige architectuur en reliëfs.
Wandel door de pittoreske wijk Plaka met zijn labyrintische straatjes en levendige vibes! Plaka is een attractie voor zowel toeristen als de lokale bevolking en is een van de oudste wijken van Athene en een must-see tijdens uw bezoek.
Een andere must-see, de vlooienmarkt van Monastiraki is gedurfd en kleurrijk, met zijn kraampjes en winkels die alles verkopen, van antiek en bric-a-brac tot vinylplaten en traditionele Griekse sandalen.
We gaan nu terug naar Thiseion en de Heuvel van Pnyx waar volksvergaderingen plaatsvonden. Pnyx wordt beschouwd als de geboorteplaats van de democratie en biedt ook een prachtig uitzicht op de Akropolis en tal van fotomogelijkheden.
U ziet de gevangenis waar Socrates naar verluidt werd vastgehouden en leert hoe hij de ontvangen wijsheid uitdaagde, hoe hij op dubieuze beschuldigingen terechtstond en waarom hij weigerde Athene te ontvluchten, waarbij hij een waardige dood verkoos boven een vernederende ontsnapping.
We sluiten onze tour af met een bezoek aan de top van de Muses Hill. U ziet het Philopappos Monument en leert over Plato, misschien wel de enige, meest invloedrijke figuur in de hele geschiedenis van de filosofie. We bespreken zijn opvattingen over politiek, de aard van rechtvaardigheid, waarheid en het goede leven voordat we naar beneden gaan naar de ingang van de heuvel, zodat u uw wandeling naar de Akropolis kunt voortzetten of terug kunt keren naar Thiseion voor een welverdiende koffie!

Vicky’s tour was outstanding. After visiting the Acropolis the previous day, we felt we hadn’t really gotten a sense of the people and stories that animated Athens’ history so we signed up for her walking tour. Her insights about figures like Theseus, Pericles, and Socrates were enlightening and interesting. We liked that she asked about our interests and made the tour quite interactive. She’s a teacher at heart. The tour was well curated and full of information, but not overwhelming with too many details. A perfect balance. She is really good at this and we wish all tours we went on this trip could be as high quality as this one!
It is a wonderful tour. Vicky is a super attentive, pleasant, enthusiastic guide... we explored Athens for 3 hours, getting to know the most interesting places while reflecting on philosophy, politics, Greek mythology, and current society... Totally recommendable. Do not hesitate to hire her if you want to know the city of Athens from its deepest roots. It should be an essential requirement on any visit to Athens.
Vicki was an excellent tour guide. We met at the statue of Theseus, which was very convenient and easy for us to connect. Vicki provided wonderful insights into the philosophy, politics, and history of Athens from the ancient up to modern times. We walked at a relaxed pace to the places on the tour. This was our first tour after arriving in Athens, and Vicki provided an excellent introduction for us and provided recommendations for further exploration.

It gave us the perfect overview of Greek history, notable figures, and important locations — and also introduced us to the modern Greek neighbourhood that will be home for the next few days. This tour was wonderful! Vicky is very knowledgeable on history in her home town of Athens. Her knowledge of the Greek philosophers was extensive and her lovely warm manner made this tour so delightful! A must do expedience when in Athens.
This tour was what we needed! The walk was “easy” and we still saw several sites. Our group was small so we didn’t have anyone get too far ahead or too far behind. It was casual and fun and conversational throughout, with lots of discussion and sharing about each site. We got to talk about mythology as well as real political and historical figures/events, and all the ways Athens/Greeks blend and weave these things into an amazing tapestry! The stories were all fun, and we got some new book referrals that we downloaded to listen to throughout the rest of our trip (Heroes by Fry). It did start to rain, so we did split off a little early, but it was a lovely way to spend the morning!
