Een bezoek aan de 12e-eeuwse basiliek van San Clemente onthult een glanzend gouden mozaïek boven de centrale apsis. St. Clement's is door de eeuwen heen getransformeerd van een privéwoning waar in de eerste eeuw een geheime christelijke eredienst plaatsvond tot een imposante basiliek. Wat er onder de basiliek lag, was tot 1860 onbekend, toen overstromingen een Ierse Dominicaanse rooms-katholieke priester en archeoloog naar de verdiepingen onder de basiliek leidden. Opgravingen zijn aan de gang. Tegenwoordig kun je over drie niveaus tot 30 meter onder de grond afdalen. Op het eerste niveau vinden we een 4e-eeuwse basiliek, lang vergeten na de bouw van de 12e-eeuwse basiliek erboven. Daaronder vind je de overblijfselen van een oude heidense Mitraïsche tempel. Nog lager, ruïnes van oude Romeinse huizen.

This was spectacular. Our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and genuinely cared about the material. He was patient with question and his enthusiasm made this a very much enjoyable experience. He even helped us get a taxi in the end and waited for the taxi to arrive.

We had an amazing underground tour of the Basilica of San Clemente with Eddy! He was incredibly energetic, engaging, and knowledgeable throughout the entire experience. We found the tour a little long many stairs but we're able to relax in the gardens which we did after before heading back to our hotel thankyou for the experience worth the trip
