Verken Rome in de voetsporen van Robert Langdon in de bestverkochte roman van Dan Brown, Angels and Demons! De tour begint bij de kerk van Santa Maria della Vittoria. Hier vond Langdon de derde dode kardinaal, die gebrandmerkt was met het woord vuur. Je zult ook het Pantheon zien, waar Robert Langdon arriveert nadat hij een aanwijzing verkeerd heeft begrepen. Zijn beoogde bestemming was de kerk van Santa Maria del Popolo. Je stopt voor de Sint-Pietersbasiliek en ziet het punt op het plein waar de hoofdpersoon een andere dode kardinaal vond, gebrandmerkt met het woord lucht. Je gids neemt je mee door de belangrijkste plekken in het oude stadscentrum, waaronder het Repubblica-plein en het Navona-plein, waar Langdon hier de laatste dode kardinaal vindt, gebrandmerkt met het woord water. Vanaf het Navona-plein ga je naar Castel Sant'Angelo, een verzamelplaats van de Illuminati, en hoor je over de passetto, een verborgen doorgang die naar Vaticaanstad leidt.

De kerk staat bekend om het meesterwerk van Gian Lorenzo Bernini in de Cornaro-kapel, de XTC van Sint-Teresa. De basiliek is enorm populair geworden sinds het verscheen in de roman Angels & Demons, geschreven door de Amerikaanse auteur Dan Brown.
De bouw van het gebouw begon in het jaar 135 onder leiding van keizer Hadrianus, die het als mausoleum voor zichzelf en zijn gezin wilde gebruiken. Het gebouw werd later door de pausen gebruikt als fort en kasteel en is nu een museum. Je ziet Castel Sant'Angelo van buitenaf en je gids vertelt je alles over de geschiedenis ervan.
Het Pantheon is zonder enige twijfel een van de best bewaarde oude monumenten in Rome. Het is een prachtig voorbeeld van het hergebruik vanuit christelijk perspectief van een heilig gebouw gewijd aan alle goden. Het staat in het hart van de oude Campus Martius, in een van de laagste delen van Rome, en de imposante gevel domineert de zuidkant van Piazza della Rotonda. In 1870 werd het Pantheon het heiligdom van de koningen van Italië en herbergt het stoffelijk overschot van Victor Emanuel de Tweede, Humbert de Eerste en Margaretha van Savoye. We, two neighbors, did the ‘Angels & Demons’ hike today on probably one of the hottest days in Rome. Our guide Irene led us from place to place and flawlessly told us all the details about the different locations. There were only two of us, so we had a private tour and therefore there was a lot of time to discuss all the differences between the book and the film. Irene was also perfectly able to explain what did not match what you see in the film at the locations. All in all a very successful afternoon that ended on the Sint-Pieter square.

This was a delightful morning in Rome. We are both fans of Dan Brown’s Angels & Demons, one of us had read the book and one of us had seen the film. Irene had done both several times and was able to accommodate our different levels of knowledge easily. In fact, she was able to give an easy refresher on the story. She was full of knowledge about them both and Rome itself. She knew so many little details that made Angels & Demons come alive. And fascinatingly, she was able to detail all the changes the film makers made when filming in the basilicas. Irene also made Rome come alive with knowledge of water fountains, coffee bars - she even helped us to buy a leather jacket. We walked at an easy pace - the three hours passed very quickly. The biggest take home for me was how even some of the more modest basilicas were filled with beauty and rich history - don't confine your visit to the more famous sites. Irene was a fantastic guide who was warm, engaging and passionate about her city. She has certainly made our morning one memorable and one of the highlights of our trip. Do not waste your time with this one. The tour operator cancelled on the morning of our tour while we were walking to the pickup spot. They previously requested that we move our tour to a different date, though we were unable to accommodate due to other tours booked during our time in Rome. They provided the vague excuse of “operational issues”, though we assume it was because we were the only two people booked on the tour (though the tour operator denies this). We would highly recommend City Wonders, as our experiences with that company were great. Our tour operators were reliable, professional and knowledgeable. In particular, we enjoyed their Crypts and Catacombs tour.

Irene was a great guide and a good human being. I really enjoyed the detailed explanation. She was prepared with pictures if a part of a sight was not available, which made the whole experience feel complete. Do not waste your time …. For the price of this tour you get to go into only one church , then walk to a few fountains. Finally to St. Peter’s square . Guide didn’t talk about the movie/ book much . Meet us late and as soon as we got near St. Peter’s the tour was done …. This was at noon …tour says we would return to place we started … also completely skipped one of the churches that was listed as a stop. 4 hour tour that was done in 2 1/2 hours. Very disappointed:( This felt very much like a scam.
