Het meest ambitieuze project van Mexico-Stad in de 20e eeuw, een universiteitsstad, huisvest de toekomst van Mexico, waar de belangrijkste intellectuelen die ons land heeft voortgebracht hebben gestudeerd, zoals de Nobelprijswinnaar Octavio Paz. Het werd gebouwd in functie van de architectuur met de muurschilderingen van onder meer Rivera, Siqueiros en O Gorman die we u in detail zullen uitleggen.
In opdracht van Diego Rivera ontwierp Juan O'Gorman in 1931 een van de eerstefunctionalistische gebouwen in Latijns-Amerika: een huis voor de schilder en een ander voor zijn vrouw Frida Kahlo, waar ieder zijn eigen atelier zou hebben. Het ligt in het zuiden van Mexico-Stad en is gewijd aan het behoud van de nagedachtenis van de muralist en zijn vrouw; evenals de studie en analyse van zijn artistieke generatie.
De site valt op door zijn uitgebreide collectie pre-Spaanse kunst, maar ook door zijn ecologische ruimte met endemische flora en fauna. Rivera ontwierp het architecturale werk om zijn enorme collectie precolumbiaanse stukken te beschermen, terwijl hij in het hoofdgebouw de mooiste werken van dit complex tentoonstelde. Er zijn 16 schetsen te zien voor verschillende muurschilderingen gemaakt door Rivera begin jaren dertig. Exceptional tour discovering lesser-known places that take your breath away. A special thanks to Jesus, who with his enthusiasm guided me in discovering Mexican history and mythology. A tour not to be missed!
We had a wonderful personalized tour with Tiare who was inquisitive, informative and friendly. We enjoyed her knowledge about the history of the university murals and Olympic stadium and then went to see Diego and Frida’s studio space. Unfortunately we did not have time to visit the 3rd stop on the tour as we had Casa Azul booked later that afternoon. However instead Tiare took us to a local market to taste delicious tacos and explore the area around casa azul prior to our appointment. We had a great day and would definitely recommend Tiare as a tour guide for others and for our return to CDMX!

We visited UNAM, the Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo Studio House Museum, and concluded at the Museo Anahuacalli with its impressive pre-Hispanic art collection. Jorge is an exceptional guide—articulate, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about Mexican art and culture. His enthusiasm brought each location to life, and having the tour to myself allowed for a perfectly tailored experience. Highly recommend for anyone interested in Mexican art and history!
This was one of the best tours we have been on. Our guides combined the history of Mexico with architectural and art history insights. We enjoyed the tour of the the University and the Frieda Kahlo and Diego Rivera houses, but the true highlight was visiting the Museo Anahuacalli at the end. A fabulous day!
