Deze twee uur durende wandeltocht is een diepe duik in de vuile geschiedenis van de Five Points buurt in NYC, ooit "de vuile kern van de sloppenwijken van New York City" genoemd en een gebied van "morele lepra." In zekere zin is het ook een spooktocht, want we verkennen een geografie (straten en natuurlijke elementen) die door ontwikkeling en herontwikkeling is uitgewist. We zullen het leven van de mensen die in dit gebied (nu Chinatown) woonden van 1800 - 1900 blootleggen, en bespreken hoe riolering, seks en ziekte een buurt doordrongen met de "armste van de armen" totdat het werd gesloopt en herbouwd vanaf 1897. Dit is geen tour voor de zwakkeren van hart! Uw Gids voor deze tour is een afgestudeerde van de Sanitation Foundation's Trash Academy en heeft een Master of Public Administration van de Columbia University. Dit onderwerp is haar passie!

We zullen bespreken hoe Collect Pond werd getransformeerd van een zoetwatervijver met een park naar een stinkend, vervuild moeras naar een vuile stortplaats. Op deze plek bespreken we ook de Tombes (aka de Halls of Justice).
De tour stopt net ten oosten van Columbus Park op Worth Street. We zullen het hebben over de historische locatie en verhalen van Paradise Square, The Old Brewery, Cow Bay, en de kruising van straten die de Five Points buurt zijn naam gaven.
De tour gaat verder door het historische gebied van de Five Points en stopt bij de voormalige locaties van Donovan's Alley, Chatham Theatre, Chatham Square, Park Street, Mulberry Bend, Bandit's Roost en Bottle Alley. We bezoeken de site van een voormalig berucht bordeel en zien de oudste woning in New York City. Tijdens de tour bespreken we riolering, seks en ziekte in de Five Points van 1800 - 1900.

The "Sewage, Sex, and Sickness in the Five Points" walking tour is a fascinating deep dive into the unknown corners of what was once the most densely populated neighborhood in New York City. Learning about the trials and tribulations that immigrants had to deal with on a daily basis, gives us a new-found appreciation for social safety nets and access to healthcare. Suzanne's well-researched tour is intriguing and informative -- with irreverent humor thrown in for good measure! Highly recommended!

Susanne's tour is a delicious—and, on occasion, delightfully disgusting (hey, we're talking about 19th-century sewage here!) —journey back to 19th-century New York. Suzanne Reisman brought to life an undercounted era of New York City history. Her narration made the former Five Points district feel like a ghost landscape: a place whose streets, buildings, smells, and social conditions have largely been erased by redevelopment, but whose history still lingers beneath present-day Chinatown. By interpreting the neighborhood through sewage, sex, sickness, poverty, and survival, she allowed us to see what no longer visibly exists and to sense the human reality behind the notorious reputation of the old Five Points.
