De stad Jaisalmer is een zeer oude stad uit de 12e eeuw. De tour begint vanaf het fort van Jaisalmer door nauwe bondgenoten van de oude stad. Bezoek aan het paleis, jain-tempels en de prachtige oude herenhuizen genaamd nathmal haveli en patwon ki haveli.

Jaisalmer Fort is het tweede oudste fort in Rajasthan, gebouwd in 1156 AD door de Rajput Rawal (heerser) Jaisal van wie het zijn naam ontleent, en stond op het kruispunt van belangrijke handelsroutes (inclusief de oude zijderoute) Het fort heeft een paleis, jain tempels, uitzicht op de stad. het is een levend fort met 4000 inwoners. veel huizen, hotels, restaurants.
Nathmal ki Haveli, Jaisalmer is een architectuur uit de late 19e eeuw die ooit het huis van de premier was. Het is beroemd om zijn buitengewone architectuur en wordt beschouwd als de beste in Jaisalmer. Blijkbaar zit er een interessant verhaal achter. De grootse structuur is hard werken van twee broers, Hathi en Lullu, die juweliers waren en geen architect. Beiden begonnen tegelijkertijd met verschillende facetten van het gebouw. Als gevolg hiervan zijn de linker- en rechtervleugel van het gebouw hetzelfde maar niet identiek. De geschriften over de Haveli zijn in het echt nooit door de architectenbroeders gezien en zijn gegraveerd door beschrijvingen van de mensen die hem hadden gezien.
De kooplieden van Jaisalmer bouwden enkele van de meest sierlijke woningen ooit. Patwon Ki Haveli is gemaakt van Jaisalmer-zandsteen, deze zijn versierd met jaalis en uitgebreide gevels. De meest bekwame stenen worden aan de buitenkant gedaan, omdat ze een show van rijkdom waren meer dan iets anders. De grootste en meest sierlijke van de haveli's is de Patwon-ki-Haveli, een set van vijf naast elkaar gelegen huizen, gebouwd door vijf Jain-broers in de eerste helft van de 19e eeuw. Dit waren de vijf zonen van Guman Chand, een handelaar in textiel en edele metalen.

Harish is a very knowledgeable about Jaisalmer having been born and raised in Jaisalmer. He took us to all the city highlights and bazaars. Harishji took us along for a 5 hour tour of the Jaisalmer Fort & surrounding attractions such as Nathmal & Patwon ki Haveli. With his amazing story telling ability & sense of humour, we had an enriching download of Jaisalmer’s history, got an amazing tour of the fort including a panaromic view from a cafe, details of the beautiful jain temple in fort premises, a taste of the famed Kachori & Ghotwa and also the story of Satyajit Ray shooting his famous “Sonar Kella” ! Harish is a fantastic guide. He took us through an excellent walk inside the Jaisalmer Fort pointing out noteworthy sites and providing the right amount of information to make the walk interesting. Harish also knows the best places inside the fort where you can take a short break, use a restroom or sip on a drink while you refresh yourself. He took us to the intricately carved Jain temples, the wonderful havelis as well as Bada Bagh to see the cenotaphs amazingly lit up in the rays of the setting sun. Harish is fluent in English, articulate and knowledgeable and we had a wonderful day exploring Jaisalmer with him. An added benefit with Harish, is that he is an excellent photographer and he took some great snaps capturing the memories from this trip which we would always cherish.
