Cyprus herbergt enkele werkelijk indrukwekkende kloosters - echte architectonische hoogstandjes, die zowel religieuze als niet-religieuze bezoekers van heinde en verre lonken in de meest vredige en idyllische landelijke omgevingen. Dit UNESCO-werelderfgoed, oorspronkelijk een klooster, is een complex van drie kerken – Ioannis Lampadistis, Agios Irakleidios en een Latijnse kapel – allemaal onder een enkel, enorm houten dak. Gelegen in de Troodosvallei van Marathasa (vlak bij het dorp Kalopanagiotis), is de precieze datum van de stichting van het klooster niet bekend, en het gebouwencomplex dat vandaag de dag nog bestaat heeft uitgebreide reconstructie en restauratie ondergaan in verschillende periodes. De kerk van Agios Ioannis Lampadistis werd gebouwd in 1731. Het graf van de heilige, daterend uit de 12e eeuw, is te vinden onder de smalle noordoostelijke boog, en de schedel van de heilige ligt in een nis. Het icoon van Lampadistis dateert uit 1543. Een zeer interessant Byzantijns museum is te vinden in de buurt van de kerk.
Het klooster van Kykkos, gelegen in het bergachtige gebied van de Marathasa-vallei, is het rijkste en meest weelderige van het eiland en staat op een bergtop, op een hoogte van 1.318 meter.
Het pittoreske dorp lijkt op een amfitheater, waarbij het onderste deel van het dorp één hoogte heeft en het bovenste deel een andere, waardoor het wordt gescheiden in Pano (boven) en Kato (onder) Platres.
Het klooster dat is gewijd aan de Maagd Maria, onderscheidt zich door de natuurlijke schoonheid van de omgeving en is gebouwd op een bergtop, tussen Platres en het dorp Prodromos, midden in het dennenbos van Troodos, waar de naam vandaan komt.

Our family of four had a lovely day, full of experiences and beautiful sites. While Fitos, our tour guide, took us to numerous monasteries, he explained us about the history and culture of Cyprus, including his childhood when his family had to flee from their home located in the northern region of the island. We enjoyed the beautiful nature during driving on exciting serpentines in the mountains, and we stopped at some places, either to have a great Cyprus coffee, a tasty local lunch or to have a look at a traditional village. At the end of the day we arrived back full of great experiences.
Our cruise ship stopped in Limassol for a very limited time. We (2 couples) wanted to get out into the mountains and see the monasteries and enjoy the countryside. Marius was a great driver and tour guide, and we had a very comfortable van. He met us right as we exited the ship, and took us all over the mountains to Kykkos monastery, Trooditissa monastery, and to Omodos village. The scenery was stunning. On the way back to the ship, he took us to the Kolossi castle, which in the early 1300s was under the control of the Knights Templar. Marius was extremely personable and knowledgeable about the sites we visited. He even bought us some thick, rich Cyprus coffee. I believe we had the best tour of Cyprus of anyone on the ship. Finally and importantly, Marius got us back to the ship right on time. I highly recommend this tour with iTaxi for your cruise ship stop in Cyprus! Our itinerary had to be adjusted due to weather, but it still ended up being a perfect day. Fitos taught us a ton about the island's history and culture and we loved the atmosphere in the mountains. I would go out of my way to book with this company again when I return to Cyprus.
Our one day private trip was fabulous! Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of Cyprus and also gave us an authentic experience of Cyprus food and culture. I do plan to go back to Cyprus for another visit and plan to use their services.
