Deze historische steden zijn perfect voor een onafhankelijke verkenning, een mix van Etruskisch erfgoed, middeleeuwse architectuur en adembenemende landschappen. Stap terug in de tijd en ontdek de rijke geschiedenis van de Etrusken. Etrurië was ooit een bloeiende regio in Midden-Italië, gelegen in het gebied dat nu Lazio, Toscane en Umbrië omvatte. Het meeste wat mensen weten over de Etruskische beschaving komt van schilderijen en artefacten artefacten die zijn opgegraven na duizenden jaren begraven te zijn geweest. Dwaal door de middeleeuwse straatjes, bewonder adellijke paleizen en ontdek de geheimen van de beroemde Etruskische Necropolis, een UNESCO-werelderfgoedlocatie. De Etruskische Necropolis van Monterozzi ligt boven een hoogland ten oosten van Tarquinia (Viterbo) en telt ongeveer 6000 graven, waarvan de meeste in de rots zijn gegraven en zijn bedekt met tumulus, de oudste van hen dateert uit de zevende eeuw voor Christus.
De prachtige romaanse kerk van Sint-Maria in het kasteel verdient een hoofdstuk op zich. De kerk ligt in het oudste deel van Tarquinia, waar het Castrum Cargnetum lag, de kern van het oude Corneto. Om het te bereiken, moet je langs de Via di Porta Castello lopen, de oude poort oversteken met de toren van Dante en de toren van Matilde di Canossa op de achtergrond. Een paar stappen om 1000 jaar terug te catapulteren! De sfeer hier is gewoonweg magisch, vooral 's nachts wanneer de straten alleen worden verlicht door het licht van de straatlantaarns ... de ideale plek voor een romantische wandeling in de geschiedenis.
Het Nationaal Etruskisch Museum van Tarquinia is gevestigd in Palazzo Vitelleschi en is ongetwijfeld een van de belangrijkste attracties van de stad. Het Palazzo Vitelleschi verdient een bezoek voor zichzelf! Gebouwd door kardinaal Giovanni Vitelleschi tussen 1436 en 1439 met een ontwerp van Giovanni Dalmata, dankzij de gelijktijdige aanwezigheid van gotische en renaissance-elementen en een echt architecturaal meesterwerk.
Een mooie wandeling door de smalle straatjes van het historische centrum van Tarquinia. Op Piazza Giacomo Matteotti vind je het Palazzo Comunale, de monumentale achttiende-eeuwse fontein
De kathedraal van Saints Margherita en Martino, gebouwd rond 1260, bevindt zich op het gelijknamige plein op een steenworp afstand van het Palazzo Vitelleschi en maakt deel uit van het bisdom Civitavecchia en Tarquinia. Opgegroeid tot de rang van kathedraal op 5 december 1435, tijdens de vijftiende eeuw werd de kathedraal vergroot door bisschop Bartolomeo Vitelleschi en vervolgens werd deze helaas in 1643 door een vreselijk vuur verwoest.
Ontdek Tuscania, een charmant stadje waar geschiedenis en natuur in perfecte harmonie samengaan. Wandel door de middeleeuwse straatjes, bewonder de prachtige Basiliek van San Pietro en geniet van een adembenemend uitzicht op het platteland van Tuscia. Een onvergetelijke reis naar de ziel van het oude Lazio.
Gevestigd in het Franciscaner klooster gesticht in 1247, grenzend aan de kerk van s. Maria del Riposo. Het eerste deel van het museum werd geopend in 1988; bestaat uit 4 kamers op de begane grond waar het funeraire complex van de nobele Hellenistische periode (IV-II sec.a.C.) wordt tentoongesteld. Van bijzonder belang zijn de funeraire complex van drie rotsgraven van de familie Curunas: naast nenfro sarcophagi met deksels restituenti rondom de figuur van de overledene, faliscan, keramiek zijn ceretaan, vulcenti en / of tarquiniesi, en chiusine. Van bijzonder belang in materialen met betrekking tot bronzen of vrouwelijke wereldbanketten. In 1997 waren open voor het publiek 2 kamers op de bovenverdieping, een gewijd aan de geschiedenis van het klooster en het oude centrum van Tuscania, de andere aan de oudste getuigenissen van necropolis (VII eeuw voor Christus). Aanstaande is de opening van nieuwe tentoonstellingssecties.

A great experience in history and archeology. Our great guides, Manuel and Frederico, took us to Tuscania and Tarquinia. Very good narratives about the region and good walking tours in each city. Took in a museum of artifacts, several churches, one excavated, and a necropolis. It was all fascinating. After checking with our preferences for lunch, we had delicious local pizza. Would highly recommend if you’re looking for an alternative to the long bus ride to Rome, or if you’ve been there enough and you’re at the port of Civitavecchia.

Emanuele was an excellent guide. He scared us at first saying he was just a driver, but he was an excellent teacher and very pleasant person. He customized our stops for what we were interested in and brought us to a very nice local restaurant for some warm soup, acquacotte on a cold day. The sites, churches and tombs were amazing and a welcome change from Rome, which we have covered pretty well in the past.

There were two of us sharing this tour, so it was a little expensive, but it was worth it. We were on a cruise, and had already spent five days in Rome. Communication with Giorgia prior to the tour was very good. Emannuele met us at the dock with an iPad with our name. The van was parked right there and, since there were only two of us, there was no jockeying for seats. As we drove to Toscania, Emannuele explained agriculture and industry and answered our questions. As we approached Toscania, he had Google explain, in English, the major sites. In Toscania, he walked us through the walled town, stopping when we wanted to shop (lavender is grown locally) to the public gardens, where there was a functioning sun dial and an exceptional view. Other stops were the Fountain of Seven Spouts and St. Peter’s Church (don’t miss the crypt). In Tarquinia we elected to visit the museum and the Monterozzi necropolis (€8, not included in the tour price, but that was stated up front). These are edifying sites, and the stars of the tour. Between the museum and the necropolis, Emannuele directed us to Il Boccone del Prete for lunch on our own. It was an excellent choice. After a gentle ride (Emannuele is a very safe driver), we returned to our ship. I would recommend this tour to anyone, and if you have more people in your party it becomes more economical. It was a treat after the big buses.

We were on a stop with our cruise ship in Civitavecchia port and were not up for the traffic and crowds in Rome so we booked this private tour. We are so glad we did! Very nice day in which we could go at our own pace. Enjoyed visiting the Etruscan tombs and churches. Also had a wonderful lunch before heading back to the port.
Tarquinia and Tuscania are very interesting, but the tour provided very little information. The driver was great and very polite, as a driver - but we were expecting more of a tour with local information, etc. Driver didn't even have a lunch recommendation in Tarquinia or places to visit. We ended up having to scramble with Google to make our own "tour"
We loved the history and lack of crowds. The guides were very helpful and there was much to see. Great alternative to visiting Rome.

We were told a luxury sedan would pick us up. Instead it was an old mini van that picked us up and then drove us to parking lot to get into another old minivan. Hub caps missing. Our driver knew nothing.
