Het grootste wereldwijde militaire conflict begon hier op 1 september 1939 met de eerste schoten op het schiereiland Westerplatte en voor het Poolse postkantoor. De oorlog eindigde voor de stad in maart 1945 toen deze bijna volledig werd verwoest door de soldaten van het Rode Leger. De fysieke uitroeiing van de Poolse en Joodse bevolking begon precies op 1 september 1939. De sporen ervan zijn de massagraven in de omliggende bossen en het eerste nazi-concentratiekamp in Stutthof.

1 uur durende transfer per privé minibus/minicoach naar Stutthof en 90 minuten begeleiding door Engels sprekende gecertificeerde Gids in het Stutthof Concentration Camp Museum. Tijdens de overdracht naar het museum zal de Gids ingewikkelde relaties beschrijven tussen de Republiek Polen, nazi-Duitsland en de Vrije Stad Gdansk tijdens het interbellum.

Bezoek aan het schiereiland Westerplatte - de plaats waar de Tweede Wereldoorlog begon. Van 1926 tot 1939 was het de locatie van een Pools militair doorgangsdepot (WST), gesanctioneerd op het grondgebied van de vrije stad Danzig. Op 1 september 1939 opende het slagschip Sleeswijk-Holstein het vuur op het Poolse garnizoen zonder enige waarschuwing. Zeven dagen later besloot majoor Henryk Sucharski zich over te geven wegens gebrek aan munitie en voorraden.
De verdediging van het Poolse postkantoor in Danzig was een van de eerste daden van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Europa, als onderdeel van de invasie van Polen. We zullen een kijkje nemen in het historische gebouw en de verdedigers van het Poolse postkantoor-monument.

This is an exceptional tour that should not be missed. Our tour guide Maciej Snarski brought history to life for us. We had time constraints but he worked out the best itinerary for us. He had cool drinks and snacks to refresh us and took us for a marvelous local lunch so we could enjoy polish cuisine. What a great day of learning about the country and the history.

Maciej was a pleasure to listen to as our tour guide! He had such excellent knowledge of his subject and provided interesting detail about the sites we visited.
