Wenen is een spiegel : een stad met een keizerlijk spiergeheugen, catastrofale verkeerde inschattingen en een opmerkelijke naoorlogse heruitvinding. Bij Upper Belvedere beginnen we met het meest royale panorama van Wenen. Gebouwd door prins Eugene, een militair genie die nooit regeerde, werd het paleis in 1955 de symbolische geboorteplaats van de Tweede Republiek Oostenrijk. Van keizerlijke ambitie naar naoorlogse neutraliteit — de verschuiving is direct vanaf het terras zichtbaar.
Belvedere Gardens & Lower Belvedere - dalend langs de barokke tuinas, lezen we het landschap als een politiek statement : orde, hiërarchie, en de esthetiek van macht.
Sovjet-oorlogsmonument - op Schwarzenbergplatz eert het Sovjet-monument uit 1945 de duizenden soldaten van het Rode Leger die stierven tijdens het beëindigen van de nazi-overheersing in Wenen. Een herinnering dat bevrijding en bezetting naast elkaar kunnen bestaan in het geheugen.
Hochstrahlbrunnen & Franse ambassade Een monumentale fontein ter ere van het alpiene kraanwater van Wenen, omlijst door de elegante Franse ambassade — twee geallieerde mogendheden, twee zeer verschillende architecturale boodschappen.
Een korte tramrit over de Ringstraße — Wenens 19e-eeuwse prestigeproject — brengt ons langs de herbouwde Staatsopera, een symbool van culturele continuïteit na de verwoestingen in oorlogstijd.
Mozart leidt een tuin die ooit tot het keizerlijk hof behoorde. Op een steenworp afstand : de Academie voor Schone Kunsten, die een jonge Adolf Hitler beroemd afwees — een voetnoot die de geschiedenis in een krantenkop veranderde.
Maria Theresa beheerst nog steeds haar plein, geflankeerd door de tweelingmusea. Op de achtergrond: een van de zes FLAK-torens van Wenen — onverwoestbare betonnen getuigen van de gemilitariseerde laatste maanden van de stad.
Een podium voor keizerlijke ceremonie, militaire trots en – in maart 1938 – Hitlers Anschluss-toespraak. Tegenwoordig wordt het plein omlijst door parlement, stadhuis, musea en het Burgtheater : een panorama van macht, cultuur en de kwetsbaarheid van beide.
Een paleisstad die zeven eeuwen lang als zetel van de macht diende. Van hertogen tot keizers tot het moderne presidentschap — het gebouw belichaamt de lange boog van Oostenrijk van monarchie tot republiek.
Waar keizerlijke gevels samenkomen met kerkelijke grandeur en hedendaagse luxe boetieks. Een herinnering dat Wenen altijd ceremonie, commercie en spiritualiteit in balans heeft gehouden.
Op de plaats van de middeleeuwse Joodse gemeenschap van Wenen — verwoest in 1421 — staat de “Naamloze Bibliotheek”, ter nagedachtenis aan de 65.000 Oostenrijkse Joden die in de Shoah zijn vermoord. Een rustige, essentiële stop.
De pestzuil : de contrareformatie in marmer, waarbij kunst en toewijding worden gebruikt om een stad na crisis terug te winnen.
Sint-Stefanuskathedraal Het gotische hart van Wenen. In april 1945 brandden delen van de kathedraal af toen plunderaars nabijgelegen winkels in brand staken — een tragisch einde aan een oorlog die de stad al zoveel had gekost.

The tour guide did a fabulous job showing us sites we did not see and also incorporating sites we had seen and putting the history altogether. It was enjoyable and informative. We appreciate his changing the schedule so we ended up at our last separate tour for the day. Great job all around.

Brigitte. Was our guide for a tour of Hidden Gems in Vienna. She pivoted the tour to show us the wonderful hidden gems in Vienna. She was so knowledgeable and thoughtful in the tour. She answered our questions with great patience and humour. Her insights into the history, art and culture of Vienna were incredible. She shared anecdotal facts for so many of the interesting sites we visited. From the Jesuit church, to the Jewish memorial. From the Anker (anchor) insurance company building to the Anker clock . She also showed us amazing passageways which connected different areas of interest around Vienna. We learned and saw so much more of Vienna than we ever could have done on our own. Brigitte took the time to ensure we had a proper dinner on Christmas Day. She stopped at a restaurant and booked us a table for our Christmas dinner (when most restaurants were closed).. Lastly, she even hopped on the subway train with us to show us the route back to our hotel. Being with Brigitte was one of our most memorable experiences in Vienna. Our guide, Walter, was fantastic. Born and revised in Vienna, with a decade in the US, we knew every aspect of the city, its history and the significance to the West. He started with a conversation about what we had already seen and how long we were going to be in Vienna and what else we were scheduled to do. Walter taylored our tour to see everything else as well as knowing the history and culture. He was a master of the subway, trains and trolleys so we got to see the whole city which is amazing. He was own time and reminded of an old world gentleman. A fantastic experience that I highly recommend.
