I was fresh off reading the recent Hinman/Sandoval "All Day and All of the Night" day-by-day compendium of the Kinks activities going into this walking tour through Muswell Hill. My wife and I got personal attention from Ceri, who was engaging, energetic, considerate and a wealth of knowledge on many British Invasion bands. I learned some stories I hadn't heard and imparted some that I had. The most valuable part of the tour was having Ceri shepherd us to the places I'd read about to see them in person, understand the neighborhoods the Kinks grew up in and how buildings and culture changed over the years. Further insights about English schools, connections with Rod Stewart, and competition with the Beatles and Stones were all fascinating. The walking was at a good pace--it was warm but a break from the heat wave hitting the UK all week. The tour was advertised as 2 hours but ran 30 min over due to the bus ride to see the understated Konk studio. That's the one part that wasn't really necessary. Ceri carried a guitar throughout and treated us to a Sunny Afternoon serenade at The Clissold Arms. Overall, as a lifelong fan who knows the songs inside and out and a lot of the band's history, for me the tour was less about learning new facts and more about soaking up the environment that engendered a genius and a host of great music.
