De stad Colonia del Sacramento, hoofdstad van het departement Colonia, ligt tussen 2,5 en 3 uur rijden van de hoofdstad van het land, Montevideo. Houd er ook rekening mee dat, aangezien het een dagelijkse tour is, passagiers al rond het middaguur in de stad Colonia del Sacramento en halverwege de tour tussen de 1,5 en 2 uur vrij hebben voor hun lunch. Het gastronomische aanbod in de omgeving is gevarieerd en van goede kwaliteit. Bovendien kan onze gids bepaalde plaatsen aanbevelen om hetzelfde te doen.
Bezoek aan de enige bestaande arena in Uruguay, ingehuldigd in 1910. Na jaren van leegstand werd deze gerenoveerd en gerestaureerd, om in 2021 heropend te worden als entertainmentcentrum en museum.
Het bord van Keulen, met uitzicht op de rivier, is een must-see voor toeristen met een geweldig uitzicht op de kust en een deel van de stad. Een bijzondere plek om foto's te maken.
De Puerta de la Ciudadela markeert de ingang van de oude koloniale stad. Gebouwd voor de stichting van de stad in 1680 door de Portugezen, vormde het de enige in- en uitgangen van de versterkte stad te midden van een geschil tussen de Spaanse en Portugese kronen.
De top, gebouwd in 1857, biedt een uitstekend uitzicht over de stad en biedt op heldere dagen ook uitzicht op Buenos Aires. Ernaast liggen ruïnes van oude gebouwen en aan de voorkant ligt het oude centrale plein van het historische centrum.
Het ontstaat op de Plaza Mayor en loopt verder op een helling tot aan de Río de la Plata. Het is de meest karakteristieke straat van de stad met zijn pittoreske en historische huizen en zijn bijzondere kasseien.
Gebouwd in de 18e eeuw voor hoge ambtenaren van de stad, Het was het hoofdkwartier bijna een eeuw na de plaats waar de titel van onderkoning van de Rio de la Plata aan Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros werd toegekend. Vandaag gerestaureerd en functioneert als museum.
Gebouwd in 1680 als onderdeel van de historische stad, eerst in aarde en stro, en vervolgens in kalk en steen, op de helling van de Plaza de Armas, is het de oudste kerk gebouwd in Uruguay.
Geniet van het prachtige uitzicht over de stad en het historische centrum, evenals van enkele zeilboten en jachten die daar afgemeerd liggen.
Bezoek de grootste collectie potloden ter wereld. In de gangen vind je ook het kleinste potlood ter wereld, evenals potloden die door de directeur van Faber Castell zelf aan de eigenaar van het museum zijn gegeven. Je vindt er ook asbakken, sleutelhangers, speldjes, parfumflesjes en meer! Er is ook ruimte om typische Uruguayaanse kruidenierswaren te kopen.

Our guide of Le Club VIP Tour was Gonzalo, who brought us safely and on time to Colonia. He introduced us to the history and culture of Colonia in a varied and informative way on a very well planned tour. His recommendation for lunch on the riverbank we can only recommend. Gonzalo, from Le Club was awesome. We booked this just the day before as heard Colonia was worth the visit and it was. But as had never been to Uruguay, getting a private tour was the way to Go. Gonzalo is friendly, personable, and knowledgeable. He helped us learn more than a bit about the country and the city. He also was great in asking what we wanted to do, and shaped the day to us, including adding a trip to the Winery in the afternoon (worth it). I recommend him to everyone.

We had an excellent day in Colonia de Sacramento with our guide and driver Gonzolo. He picked us up at the appointed spot and quickly began to tell us about Montevideo and Uruguay. He had wonderful stories about sights along the way to Colonia. In Colonia, we walked through the colorful and historic streets while learning of the town’s Portuguese history. He also took us to the former bullring that has been beautifully repurposed as a performing arts center. After a visit to the lovely church, we were given free time for lunch and further exploring. Colonia is historical and picturesque, a nice break from Montevideo and Buenos Aires. On the drive back we stopped at the pencil, key chain and ashtray museum. It sounded a bit corny, but was actually a great stop and good conversation topic. We would highly recommend Gonzolo and his company, Le Club, when you are in Montevideo.

Interesting tour with a variety of activities — history and enjoyable scenery/gardens. Favio was a knowledgeable, enthusiastic guide. It was very obvious he loved sharing the history of this area with others. The pencil museum on the way back to Montevideo was a fun stop and included much more than pencils.

Our trip to Colonia was absolutely perfect, thanks to Gonzalo as our guide. He ensured we got there safely and took the time to give us a detailed tour of the area upon arrival. We truly appreciated having free time to enjoy lunch and explore on our own. He was incredibly attentive to our needs, answered all our questions, and highlighted key landmarks during the 2.5-hour drive from Montevideo. This was our second day with Gonzalo, and we couldn’t be more impressed. Highly recommend this tour!

We chose to take a private tour to ensure we got to see as much of Colonia as possible and not be rushed by being part of a bigger group. Gonzalo picked us up on time and was very knowledgeable about everything on our route. He was very chatty and able to tell us about things we passed and was also happy to talk about life in Uruguay. He said he would be happy to stop or take detours if there was anything in particular that we wanted to see, but we were happy to be guided by him. When in Colonia, he showed us the old square but also took us out to see other parts of the town and the old bull ring, again explaining how Colonia had developed. We then returned where he left us for three hours to look around at our own accord and enjoy some lunch. We would recommend Gonzalo to anyone visiting Montevideo who wants to get out of the city and see a very different way of life.
