Barcelona is not a safe place. Thirty minutes after check-in at the Room Mate Gerard in Barri Gotic, in a cafe a few steps away, we were robbed in broad daylight. It was a professional sting, with a shill, conversation, while an accomplice slipped away with my backpack. Gone was phone, iPad, camera, money and passport. It is commonplace we learned. In Barcelona thieves in professional gangs operate with impunity. The police are indifferent. The police waiting room was a revolving door of people stunned and despondent, thirty minutes earlier enjoying a sunny holiday, now without money, credit cards, passports, consumed now with simply how they were going to get home. The police are involved. The shill who set us up was on a bicycle. He stopped in front of our cafe table. Asked us if we were “Catalan”, local. We said no, we chatted, he left. I looked down at my feet. My backpack was gone. I wondered, was there perhaps honor among these thieves that they don’t prey on the locals. A darker thought followed. These guys are dirt balls, an underclass of predators who would steal from their own family. If they rob locals, though, the locals complain and the police will have to crack down. Tourists on the other hand won’t be here next week. Without money, they’ll be gone sooner than that. That’s why the police were so unhelpful. And worse than the objective risk of theft is the cloud of constant worry that each time you step outside your hotel, each time you sit down in a cafe, each time you walk through a park, there are criminals watching you. I will never return to Barcelona. There are many old and beautiful cities in Europe where you can sit down for a sandwich without fearing that a thief is sizing you up. It is a disgrace and a stain on the city that they permit visitors to be treated this way. In Barcelona, if you are a tourist they are the predators and you are the prey. You will be safer almost anywhere else.

This was just a fabulous way to capture our family pictures in Barcelona! The photos were so different than what we could have ever done by ourselves and such an amazing memory of our trip!
