Privétrip naar het Bachkovo-klooster en het fort van Assen
Beschrijving
Vanuit Plovdiv gaan we richting het Rodopegebergte en passeren het mooie stadje Assenovgrad. In de buurt zullen we de opmerkelijke overblijfselen zien van het fort van koning Ivan Assen – een wijze heerser van het Tweede Bulgaarse koninkrijk. Daar vinden we een oude kerk uit de 13e eeuw, beschilderd met enkele authentieke iconografische stukken, evenals de uit steen gemaakte inscriptie gesneden door koning Ivan Assen. Vervolgens gaan we dieper het Rodopegebergte in richting het pittoreske Bachkovo-klooster. Het klooster is het op een na grootste klooster in Bulgarije, gesticht in 1083 en een van de meest heilige plaatsen in de Bulgaarse geschiedenis. Indien gewenst kunnen wij onderweg stoppen. Als u de enige bent die voor die dag heeft geboekt, is de tour speciaal voor u. Houd er rekening mee dat het maximale aantal mensen dat mee kan doen 6 is

Binnen in het klooster bezoeken we de hoofdkerk van de Maagd Maria, gebouwd in 1604, waar een waardevol icoon van de Maagd Maria uit 1310 wordt bewaard. Volgens de legende werkt dit opmerkelijke icoon wonderbaarlijk. Gehecht aan de Maagd Maria-kerk zien we de Aartsengelenkerk uit de 12e eeuw. De refter van het klooster is een ander juweel in het complex waar kleurrijke muurschilderingen uit 1643 bewaard zijn gebleven. Samen met het Doomsday-fresco zullen we getuige zijn van de afbeeldingen van enkele heilige monniken, oude filosofen en schrijvers als Socrates, Aristoteles, Diogenes en nog veel meer. De panoramische muurschildering op de buitenmuur van de refter geeft een vogelperspectief weer van het klooster met alle omliggende gebouwen ten tijde van het schilderij – 1846.

It was a nice drive out of Plovdiv to visit an historic monastery and ruins of a fortress. The drive & sightseeing can be done in 2 to 3 hours max.
Great guild and a great time. The views were so beautiful and we had plenty of time to see it all. Definitely recommend!
Great trip - lovely sites, really beautiful. The monastery reminded me of Rila but more intimate. The fortress is steep but if you’re fit you’ll enjoy the church and surroundings. Lovely frescos and icons

Me and my husband spent some wonderful hours of the day visiting Bachkovo Monastery and Asen's Fortress. The monastery felt so peaceful and full of history - I could've stayed there for hours. When we arrived at Asen's Fortress we admired the stunning views. Definitely make your way to the top — the stairs only look scary, but they’re really not that bad! Just a short drive om Plovdiv, but it felt like a different world. Our driver made the trip even more fascinating with his stories. It's totally worth it!

Our guide was nice and polite but didn’t explain much about the fortress and church that we visited. We wish we would have learned some of the history of these amazing spots.
