Privétour van een hele dag naar Urquhart Castle Loch Ness en Inverness

We halen u op bij de poort van Port en reizen langs de oever van de Cromarty Firth en steken de Cromarty-brug over naar het Black Isle en begeven ons naar Beauly Priory, het 13e-eeuwse klooster gebouwd voor een orde van Valliscauliaanse monniken uit Dijon in Frankrijk en verwoest door Cromwells-troepen in de 16e eeuw. We zullen dan een korte stop maken om wat Highland Cattle te zien (zie foto) voordat we verder gaan over Culnakirk Hill naar Drumnadrochit en Urquhart Castle bezoeken dat op een voorgebergte ligt dat uitsteekt in Loch Ness, het uitzicht op het Loch is fantastisch vanaf hier en het was hier in de buurt waar St. Columba naar verluidt het monster van Loch Ness heeft gezien. We gaan dan richting Inverness en als we Inverness binnenkomen, passeren we de Hill of the Fairies. We stoppen om de kathedraal en de Old High Church te zien en we passeren Inverness Castle en het standbeeld van Flora Macdonald voordat we naar Clava Cairns reizen en lunchen in Cawdor Castle voordat we onze tour beëindigen op Culloden Battlefield.

Beauly Priory is momenteel gesloten vanwege de recente harde wind waardoor het metselwerk is gevallen. We weten nog niet wanneer het weer opengaat. Beauly bezoeken we nog wel, waar je het vanaf de poort kunt zien. De Priorij van Beauly werd in de 13e eeuw gesticht als een klooster voor de Valliscauliaanse monnikenorde uit Dijon in Frankrijk. De troepen van Oliver Cromwell waren verantwoordelijk voor de vernietiging van de Priorij in de 16e eeuw. Eeuwenlang was dit een begraafplaats voor de leiders van Clan Fraser en Mackenzie en hun families. Er is een Outlander-connectie omdat Claire hier de Ziener ontmoette.
Urquhart Castle ligt op een voorgebergte dat uitsteekt in Loch Ness en is door de jaren heen vele malen bevochten. Het uitzicht op Loch Ness vanaf het kasteel is fantastisch en tijdens het bezoek kunt u de ruïnes van dit 1000 jaar oude kasteel gaan verkennen en kunt u afdalen naar de waterkant van Loch Ness. Houd je ogen open voor het geval Nessie verschijnt.
De Slag bij Culloden in 1746 was de laatste veldslag op Britse bodem. Bezoek het museum en we lopen rond de belangrijkste gebieden van het slagveld waar de zwaarste gevechten plaatsvonden, je ziet de herdenkingssteenhoop, de bron van de doden en de grafstenen van de clans, evenals het huisje van Leanach. Dit bezoek staat bovenaan de lijst voor Outlander-fans.
We zullen Clava Cairns bezoeken en je kunt 2 van de 3 Cairns betreden, deze 4000 jaar oude begraafplaats uit de Bronstijd is waar Diana Gabaldon inspiratie opdeed voor haar Outlander-serie en je zult de Cleft Stone en de steencirkels rond de Cairns zien.
Een van de oudste straten in Inverness is Church Street en de eerste plaats die we zien is Leakeys Bookshop, dit was een overheidsziekenhuis na de slag om Culloden.
Achter boekwinkel Leakeys staat de Old High Church / St. Stephens waar de Jacobitische gevangenen naartoe werden gebracht na de slag om Culloden, je kunt nog steeds de musketgaten in de kerkmuur zien waar de Jacobitische gevangenen werden geëxecuteerd. Als we vanaf het kerkhof over de rivier kijken, zien we Balnain House, dat ook een overheidsziekenhuis was na Culloden en St Marys Church, die Outlander-verbindingen heeft.
Verderop in Church Street passeren we Abertarff House. Dit is het oudste huis in Inverness en was ooit het herenhuis van de Fraser Chiefs.
Cawdor Castle heropent op 27 april 2024 Cawdor Castle met zijn Macbeth-verbindingen is een van de weinige kastelen in het Highland-gebied dat onaangetast is gebleven door de Jacobitische opstanden. Al eeuwenlang de thuisbasis van de Thanes van Cawdor, je kunt het kasteel bezichtigen en de prachtige tuinen bezoeken en je ontmoet de gravin-weduwe van Cawdor die nog steeds in het kasteel woont.

Amazing experience with this Highland Tour exceeded all of our expectations. Our drivers were kind, helpful, and brought us lots of snacks and waters. They recommended different family friendly places. Farm Ness is a must do for families. Thank you for a great day in the Highlands.

We had a wonderful tour with Billy. He was so knowledgeable and fun, we even had some silly requests like hitting golf ball and petting a coo (cow). He was able to do everything.

I had a lovely day with Lawrence! Everything was smooth and taken care of all day. He worked with me ahead of time & let me customize the tour a little bit. It was my birthday and I wanted to see some hairy coos and he came through! Seeing Loch Ness & the castle was wonderful, we did that first so we beat the crowds a bit. We saw Beauly Priory, Culloden Battlefield & Clava Cairns. We stopped for lunch at a cute little cafe & it was great. He was nice to talk to and I had a great time. Would definitely recommend & will use again when I return! Wishing I had booked a Whiskey tour too!

Super good guide! We loved the trip to Loch Ness with the castle. The guide knew some quieter areas around Loch Ness and knew a lot about the history of the clans and Scotland as well as the local area. We could plan our trip individually with the guide, who was good at making it fit with time. Can definitely be recommended.

Our tour guide, Bill, was so knowledgeable and interesting. He shared a lot of great information and history. Bill was so kind and went out of his way to find opportunities for pictures with the hairy coos. When it started to rain, he made sure we had rain jackets. Absolutely outstanding tour and guide!

We had an incredible day touring with Kevin, whose expertise, professionalism, and humor made the experience truly unforgettable. From the very start, he made us feel welcome and somehow managed to tailor the itinerary perfectly to our interests; all without being the slightest bit pushy or rushed. His ability to read the group and pace the day just right was impressive. The tour included a fantastic variety of stops: Highland cows at Robinsons Farm, whiskey tastings at Glen Ord and Urquhart Castle, tartan weaving at James Pringle Weavers, gift shopping at Holm Mills, a scenic drive through Inverness, the atmospheric Clava Cairns (complete with Harry Potter and Outlander lore), and the moving Culloden Battlefield. Billy our guide was excellent. He had extensive historical knowledge and presented it in an entertaining manner. He was very considerate and extremely helpful. We unfortunately had an interruption in our planned itinerary due to a major road closure due to an accident. Billy found alternate routes and managed to get us to all sites detailed in advertisement. Definitely would recommend him to other travelers.
