De Byzantijnse keizers hielden van niets meer dan een middag op de wagenrennen, en deze rechthoekige arena naast Sultanahmet Park was hun favoriete locatie. In zijn hoogtijdagen werd het versierd met obelisken en beelden, waarvan sommige vandaag de dag nog steeds aanwezig zijn. Het is de laatste jaren opnieuw aangelegd en is een van de populairste ontmoetingsplaatsen en promenades van de stad.
De Blauwe Moskee (in het Turks Sultanahmet Camii genoemd) is een historische moskee in Istanbul. De moskee staat bekend als de Blauwe Moskee vanwege de blauwe tegels rondom de muren van het interieur. Moskee werd gebouwd tussen 1609 en 1616 jaar, tijdens de heerschappij van Ahmed I. net als vele andere moskeeën, het bevat ook een graf van de stichter, een madrasa en een hospice. Naast nog steeds gebruikt als een moskee, is de Sultan Ahmed-moskee ook een populaire toeristische attractie in Istanbul geworden.
Een van de prachtige historische gebouwen van Istanbul is de Basilica Cisterne, gelegen ten zuidwesten van de Hagia Sophia. Deze grote ondergrondse cisterne, gebouwd door de Byzantijnse keizer Justinianus I (527–565), stond in de volksmond bekend als het “paleis van Jerebatan” vanwege de marmeren kolommen die uit het water oprijzen, die de impressie van een paleis geven. Het staat ook bekend als de Basilica Cisterne omdat er ooit een basiliek stond op de locatie waar de cisterne werd gebouwd.
Een van de oudste en grootste overdekte markten ter wereld, de Grand Bazaar dateert uit de 15e eeuw. Met meer dan 4000 winkels wordt de Grand Covered Bazaar regelmatig bezocht door de toeristen en de burgers. Het belangrijkste historische winkelcentrum van Istanbul is de Grand Bazaar met poorten die toegang bieden tot vele delen van het historische schiereiland. Bezoekers die de Grand Bazaar voor het eerst bezoeken, zullen versteld staan van de pracht en grootte.
Ooit de residentie van Ottomaanse sultans, staat Topkapi Palace als symbool van keizerlijke grandeur. We verkennen de indrukwekkende eerste binnenplaats en bewonderen de grote poorten en architectuur van buitenaf, met de optie om het binnenland te bezoeken als de tijd het toelaat.

Together with our German-speaking guide Nihal, we experienced and explored Istanbul’s historic and famous landmarks. We have rarely experienced such an expert tour during our city breaks. Everything was perfectly organized from the hotel pick-up, the organization of the process to the explanation of historical contexts. We had an unforgetable day with Nihal. The pickup from the Hotel was very convenient, the driver was really nice and the care new and clean. Nihal did the Tour in german (she is fluent and very skilled and educated). You could Tell that she really loves history, she knew the answers to all the questions we asked! We discussed the tour and all the things she had planned and she gave us some options as well, according to our preferences. She was really passionate about Showing us Istanbul.

We were in Istanbul very early in the morning and so did a brief walking tour of the “old” and “new” cities on the European side. We chose to spend more time in the spice market and the Grand Bazaar vs standing in the 2 hour line for Hagia Sophia. We climbed the Galata Tower for some amazing views. Now we have a better idea what to do when we go to spend time there…and we will be going back.

Ferry boat ride to Asian side, Taksim Area, Haggia Sofia, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar and others! With only four hours in Istanbul, this was absolutely the BEST way to spend the time. The driver was ready to roll with clear instructions for pick up, and the tour guide was OUTSTANDING and personable. Was able to see Hagia Sofia, outside of Blue Mosque, Patriarchy, and many walking sights - back to flight with plenty of time to spare. I was blown away by how much backstory, history, and insight my guide was able to pack in. We'll absolutely be back for a longer stay. If you are weighing staying in the lounge vs going on an adventure - there's no question. Make a few hours you'll never forget!

This tour was exactly what we wanted for our 7+ hour layover at IST airport. Hakan was able to customize the tour so we could see the Hagia Sophia, Great Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, Basilica Cistern, & Süleymaniye Mosque all within a couple of hours. This gave us a nice taste of what the city offers, and a desire to come back to tour with him again to get even more details! Communication was easy through WhatsApp, and the meeting place was perfect. The van was clean and modern and the driver was very good at avoiding as much traffic as possible. If you have the time I definitely recommend this tour!
