Het uitgestrekte Suwon, een populaire dagtrip vanuit Seoul, is de grootste stad in de provincie Gyeonggi-do, met vestingwerken die op de Werelderfgoedlijst staan en nog steeds rond het hart lopen. Suwon werd bijna de hoofdstad van het land in de 18e eeuw, toen de heerser van de Joseon-dynastie, koning Jeongjo, in 1794-1796 de 5,7 kilometer lange muren bouwde voordat hij het koninklijk hof naar het zuiden verplaatste. De koning stierf echter, de macht bleef in Seoul en Suwon kreeg uiteindelijk een geweldig toeristisch schouwspel. De stad ligt ongeveer 30 kilometer ten zuiden van Seoul.

De vestingmuur die op de werelderfgoedlijst staat en de oorspronkelijke stad Suwon omsluit, brengt de meeste reizigers naar de stad. Paldal-san kronkelt op en neer (143 m) en strekt zich uit over een schilderachtige 5,7 km langs vier majestueuze poorten, commandoposten, paviljoens, uitkijktorens en vuurbakenplatforms. Gebouwd door koning Jeongjo en voltooid in 1796, werd het gebouwd van aarde en geconfronteerd met grote stenen blokken en grijze bakstenen, die bijna allemaal zijn gerestaureerd.
Deze 245 hectare grote thematische ervaring is ontworpen om je terug te voeren naar de Joseon-dynastie terwijl je dwaalt door schilderachtige gronden vol met rietgedekte en betegelde gebouwen die hier zijn verhuisd vanuit heel Korea. Artiesten dragen hanbok (traditionele kleding) en maken handpotten en handgeschept papier, terwijl anderen de neiging hebben om percelen en vee te planten. Gedurende de dag zijn er shows van traditionele muzikanten, dansers, acrobaten en koorddansers, en u kunt een geënsceneerde huwelijksceremonie bekijken.

Nate was a great tour guide and host! He provided water and small snacks in his very comfortable and clean car. He grew up in the US, and moved to Korea for college, so had a unique perspective on the country. During the fortress part of the tour, he gave us the history, as well as some facts that really filled out the experience. We saw two of the gates, and walked along the ramparts. We then tried our hands at Korean traditional archery, which was fun! To finish the fortress portion of the tour, we went on a unique bus with semi-opaque LED screens for windows. We drove along the periphery of the fortress walls, and could see images of the building and plans, as well as further history on the screens. When there was something of interest to see, the screens would clear. From there we drove to the Korean Folk Village and started with lunch. Yummy! Then we saw the traditional dances in a parade, and had plenty of time to walk through the whole village, with Nate explaining what we were seeing. He took plenty of pictures for us, and made sure to tell us where to go to get the best views. We finished the tour with a dance performance in the theater, and a drive back to the hotel. It was a really special day!
