Colosseum en het Forum Romanum. Het Forum was het politieke, administratieve en religieuze centrum van Rome in de antieke wereld. Hier vindt u onder de ruïnes de Boog van Titus, Tempel van Antoninus en Faustina, de Tempel van de Vestaalse Maagden, en het Oude Senaatshuis. Het forum was vroeger een grote woestenij, maar met de uitvinding van het eerste rioleringssysteem van Rome werd het direct afgevoerd naar de rivier de Tiber om plaats te maken voor de grote paleizen en basilieken van het oude Rome.
Op het Forum Romanum wandel je tussen de ruïnes van oude tempels, basilieken en overheidsgebouwen die ooit het hart vormden van het Romeinse politieke, religieuze en sociale leven, waaronder de Tempel van Saturnus, de Boog van Titus en de Curia Julia, waar senatoren ooit debatteerden over het lot van het rijk.
Als je door Piazza Venezia loopt, bekijk dan het monument met vele namen, waaronder The Vittoriano en de 'bruidstaart', want als het een gelaagde vorm en witte kleur heeft. Het werd genoemd naar de eerste koning van Italië als een symbool van eenheid voor het land, en het bevat het graf van onbekende soldaten en een eeuwige vlam aan de voorkant die brandt voor degenen die verloren zijn in WOI.
Beklim de Capitolijnse heuvel om uit te kijken over heel het oude Rome. Hoewel het verschillende renovaties heeft ondergaan, blijft de hoofdstructuur hetzelfde, inclusief de legendarische koepel met zijn oculus (of oog van het Pantheon) aan de top. Tot op de dag van vandaag is het de grootste niet-ondersteunde koepel ter wereld, en elk jaar met Pinksteren worden rozenblaadjes door de oculus gedropt om de tongen van vuur te symboliseren die neerdalen op het volk van Christus.
De Trevifontein is misschien wel een van de meest bekende fonteinen ter wereld. Het is in veel films te zien geweest en elk jaar komen er miljoenen mensen om een munt in te gooien en een wens te doen. Rome schenkt deze munten eigenlijk aan een goed doel, naar schatting €1,4 miljoen per jaar! De fontein dateert uit de oude Romeinse tijd, tot het gebruik van het eerste aquaduct van Rome, en er wordt gezegd dat gokken te danken is aan de bouw ervan, omdat de paus ⅓ van het lottogeld gebruikte om de bouw van de Trevifontein te financieren.
Behalve dat het de thuisbasis is van de paus, is Vaticaanstad ook de thuisbasis van de Vaticaanse Musea, 's werelds grootste kunstcollectie met 9 mijl aan kunst die 4 ½ keer rond de Vaticaanse muren zou kunnen wikkelen! Het bevat 54 musea, 1400 kamers, kapellen en galerijen. Afgezien van de beroemde Sixtijnse Kapel, tonen de musea ook het enige werk van Leonardo Da Vinci in Rome, St. Hiëronymus, de Raphael-kamers en de Pinoteca, die collecties van de pausen bevat, allemaal daterend uit de middeleeuwen en zijn ingesteld in chronologische volgorde.
De Sixtijnse Kapel van Michaelangelo is misschien wel het meest bekende meesterwerk van de moderne tijd, met meer dan 5 miljoen bezoekers per jaar. Het was een project dat de kunstenaar met tegenzin op zich nam omdat zijn focus op sculpturen lag, en hij zou klagen over de fysieke tol die het van zijn lichaam eiste. Er wordt gezegd dat het ontwerp van de kapel van paus Sixtus IV is gemodelleerd naar de tempel van Salomo uit het Oude Testament, die net groter is dan een professioneel basketbalveld! Er zijn hier nog veel meer fresco's van andere kunstenaars te bewonderen, waaronder: Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Perugino, Cosimo Roselli en Sandro Botticelli.
Ten slotte krijg je de grootste basiliek ter wereld te zien, met markeringen in de kerk om ervoor te zorgen dat elke andere basiliek erin past. De nieuwsgierige bezoeker wordt getrakteerd op Michelangelo's Pieta aan de voorkant, 150 mozaïeken en Bernini's baldacchino, die 26 meter hoog is en 100.000 pond brons! Verrassend genoeg is er maar één echt schilderij in de basiliek en kan het boven de Pieta hangen. Veel pausen zijn begraven in de kerk of zijn te zien, maar de meeste pausen zijn begraven onder de basiliek, waaronder St. Peter, de eerste paus.

Excellent tour with a great mix of history, both within the church and ancient Rome.
We only had one full day to experience Rome and this tour was the perfect option! The tour company coordinated with us in advance on our personalized itinerary and we easily met up with Rahul outside of the Colosseum on the day of the tour. Actually, not 5/5 but I would give this tour a 4.5/5. We did this 7-8 hour private tour with Rahul to see the Vatican and Old Rome. He's been doing this for many years and has perfected this tour in his own way over time. He was also engaged with the kids to understand what everyone desired to get out of this tour, irrespective of age. We started off doing the Vatican City, then Old Rome. I wish it were done the other way due to the afternoon heat since old Rome is mostly outdoors, and it was hot. Given it was a private tour, he first got a sense of where we wanted to spend more time and where we wanted to spend less and planned the tour accordingly. It was a walking tour through all the sites. Make sure you wear comfortable sneakers. He carries illustrative books to give you a sense of what Rome looked like back in the day. We stopped at a self-service cafeteria for a hurried lunch, which could have been done better, in my opinion, and the money paid should have been included. All admissions to the sites were included. Also, transport between Vatican sites and Old Rome should have been included

We spent two full days touring Rome prior to our Mediterranean cruise. Our family of 7 spent a remarkable day with Rahul viewing the major Rome attractions. As others have noted Rahul's knowledge and insight is first class. I can't imagine anyone better to spend a day with to gain an appreciation and overview of Rome highlights. Our weather was HOT (100 degrees) but Rahul kept us on track and in shade as much as possible. The passion and knowledge he shared with us was unparalleled and highly recommend this tour!
The private tour of Rome and Vatican with Rahul was the best part of our visit. We met with Rahul near the Arch of Constantine and from there it was a wonderful, mesmerizing tour of Rome (Coliseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, Campidoglio, Vittoriano, Pantheon, Piazza Navono) and Vatican city museums and St. Peters Basilica. We had already covered the Spanish Steps and Trve Fountain the previous day but I'm sure Rahul would have covered them as well if we had time. Rahul was patient, enthusiastic, and willing to go the extra mile to satisfy his customers (he also doubled as a good photographer for our family pictures). All in a day from 7:30 AM until almost 5 PM with an informational tour full of nuggets of historical information about every single venue.
