Je wordt opgehaald bij de lobby van je hotel en naar Angkor Thom gebracht. Je komt de oude stad binnen via de Zuidpoort. Helemaal in het centrum ligt de tempel van Bayon – stille getuigen van de tijd, de 216 raadselachtige gezichten staren over de horizon en je kunt je alleen maar afvragen wat ze door de eeuwen heen hebben gezien. Je gids wijst je hier op de beste hoeken voor fotografie en geeft uitleg over de vele ingewikkelde gravures op de muren van de galerijen. Je gaat dan verder naar Baphuon met zijn lange verhoogde weg en een indrukwekkende gigantische liggende Boeddha, een puzzel die pas in 2011 weer in elkaar werd gezet na een 37 jaar durende verstoring veroorzaakt door de oorlog. Phimeanakas verstopt zich in de schaduwrijke jungle en biedt een fatsoenlijk uitzicht over de boomtoppen aan degenen die de steile trappen naar de top overwinnen. Als u verdergaat langs de Esplanade van het Koninklijk Paleis, beter bekend als het Terras van de Olifanten, eindigt uw verkenningstocht in het schaduwrijke gedeelte van het pittoreske Preah Palilay.
Onze volgende stop, Ta Prohm, kreeg zijn bekendheid in de 21e eeuw door de film Tomb Raider met Angelina Jolie als Lara Croft. Tegenwoordig, nu Lara er al lang niet meer is, staat deze tempel op de route van de meeste bezoekers, en terecht. Veel hoeken van Ta Prohm laten een ingewikkelde relatie zien tussen de wortels van de Spung-boom (Tetrameles Nudiflora) en oude stenen bedekt met mos. Echt een paradijs voor fotografen, mis de kans niet om de momenten van uw eigen ontdekkingsreiziger vast te leggen. Pauze voor de lunch.
Bezoek Angkor Wat, eerst een hindoeïstisch, daarna een boeddhistisch tempelcomplex in Cambodja en het grootste religieuze monument ter wereld. De tempel werd in het begin van de 12e eeuw gebouwd door de Khmer-koning Suryavarman II in Yasodharapura (het huidige Angkor), de hoofdstad van het Khmer-rijk, als zijn staatstempel en uiteindelijk mausoleum. Angkor Wat brak met de Shaivistische traditie van vorige koningen en was in plaats daarvan gewijd aan Vishnu. Het is de best bewaarde tempel ter plaatse en de enige die sinds de oprichting een belangrijk religieus centrum is gebleven. De tempel staat aan de top van de hoogklassieke stijl van de Khmer-architectuur. Het is een symbool van Cambodja geworden en staat op de nationale vlag. Terug naar de stad en afgezet bij het hotel.

Such a fantastic experience with Chansip. We are a group of 3 friends who came to Siem Reap for only the weekend. Chansip showed us around the temples on the Saturday, explaining the history with great enthusiasm. His professionalism and kindness was appreciated, and the temples were just so amazing! He catered to us (our timings) which we really appreciate. The driver was also very kind, always ready with cold water and cold towels after each temple. Our tour guide Chansip picked us up on time at the hotel with driver. On the way to the ticket office of Ankor Wat, he explained the different ticket purchase options (day ticket, 3 day pass and 1 week). We were provided with fresh cold drinks by the driver during the day tour. Chansip has a great knowledge of the culture, language, history and temple complex of Ankor Wat. He pointed out a lot to us, gave good tips and suggestions for further excursions. He is also a great photographer. Our day-long tour of the Angkor temples with Chansip was one of the best experiences of our Cambodia trip. We enjoyed our tour with Chansip! We went with 2 kids and 3 adults. He had so much great information and really enhanced our time at the temples. We had been told a guide wasn’t needed but we found that having a guide helped us understand the temples better and show us some neat facts. It was also nice to be able to ask questions about life in Cambodia. An added bonus - having a photographer that could take good photos of our group! Silong was an amazing guide and driver! Originally brought us from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap with stops along the way. Helped us out with the local language barrier and was fun to tour with. Showed us some amazing local spots outside of the stops we requested. Enjoyed him so much we asked for a tour the next day of the temples which he said yes. The second day was much better with him there. He is very knowledgeable of Cambodian history explaining everything to us along the way.
