Mahabalipuram is een schatkamer van kunst en architectonische meesterwerken en de thuisbasis van vele uit rotsen gehouwen sculpturen en majestueuze tempels. Mahabalipuram is een prachtige erfgoedsite in het hart van Zuid-India. Een tourpakket van Chennai naar Mahabalipuram zorgt ervoor dat je kunt genieten van en een breed scala aan attracties kunt verkennen, ook op één dag. Je wordt opgehaald van je verblijf in Chennai, gevolgd door een transfer naar Mahabalipuram. De sightseeing begint met een bezoek aan de Mahabalipuram Seashore-tempel. Dit is een van de oudste granieten stenen tempels in Zuid-Azië en toont de oude finesse van kunst.

De prachtige tempel kijkt uit over de Golf van Bengalen en was een belangrijk centrum tijdens het bewind van de Pallava's, toen Mahabalipuram de belangrijkste haven van hun koninkrijk was. De Shore-tempel, gebouwd door koning Raja Simha in het begin van de 8e eeuw, is een mijlpaal in het architecturale landschap van India.
Deze grot heeft 2 imposante bas-reliëfs op de muren. De eerste is Heer Vishnu die bovenop de kronkels van een slang slaapt. De andere is met godin Durga die vecht met de demon Mahishasura op een leeuw.
Gebouwd in het jaar 640, is het de oudste vuurtoren van India en een van de oudste ter wereld. Mahabalipuram was een zeer drukke haven sinds de 7e eeuw en daarom speelde deze vuurtoren een belangrijke rol bij het beschermen van zeelieden.
Dit is een imposante strijdwagen uitgehouwen uit een enkele steen. Oorspronkelijk gewijd aan Lord Shiva, heeft het nu de godheid van zijn zoon Lord Ganesh. Het werd in de 7e eeuw gebouwd door koning Mahendravarman I. Het andere hoogtepunt van deze tempel zijn de 18 inscripties in oude Grantha- en Nagari-scripts van het Sanskriet.
Deze grot is een mooi voorbeeld van de spectaculaire architectuurstijl van de Pallava's. De uit de rotsen gehouwen tempel is gewijd aan de heilige drie-eenheid van de hindoegoden: Brahma, Vishnu en Shiva. Er zijn ook mooie gravures van olifanten.
De volgende stop is Krishna's Butterball, een granieten rotsblok dat op een stenige helling staat. Dit merkwaardige rotsblok lijkt de zwaartekrachtwetten van Newton te trotseren en is geen centimeter bewogen, ondanks dat het zich al meer dan duizend jaar in deze precaire positie op de helling bevindt.
Vervolgens bezoeken we Arjuna's Penace, een bas-reliëfmonument dat wordt beschouwd als een van India's meest magnifieke stukken oude kunst, met levendige scènes uit de Mahabharata. Het reliëf is 100 voet lang en 45 voet lang! Het belangrijkste verhaal dat wordt verteld, is hoe Arjuna, een van de Pandava-broers, zware boetedoeningen uitvoerde om Lord Shiva's wapen te bemachtigen.
Panch Rathas, of de 5 strijdwagens, is onze eerste bestemming. Dit zijn uit rotsen gehouwen monolietstructuren, waarvan de strijdwagens zijn gewijd aan de hoofdcast van het Mahabharata-epos - Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima en Yudhister. Er is ook een sculptuur van een olifant naast de ratha van Nakul-Sahadeva.
Als laatste hebben we een Zuid-Indiase lunch in Hotel Mamalla Bhavan.

It's not really a day trip, more like a half day trip. It's an hours drive there from Chennai, you then get a two hour tour which is good apart from the awkward visit to a stone carving shop at the end where you are expected to buy over priced pieces. Then an hour back. We were offered a lunch which I guess could have been stretched out to an hour at a push. But really it's a two hour trip plus two hour tour. It seemed very over priced claiming to be 6 hours+. My advise would be to get your own transport there and a guide when you are there and it will probably work our a lot cheaper. We have done lots of tours all over the world including India this was definitely over sold and over priced.
