Het marinemuseum van Cartagena promoot kennis van de geschiedenis van de Spaanse marine, scheepsbouw, nautische wetenschap en haar hulpwetenschappen (kosmografie, cartografie en instrumenten), de geschiedenis van maritieme reizen en ontdekkingen, onderwaterarcheologie en immaterieel maritiem erfgoed.

Het kasteel van de conceptie of Asdrubal is een middeleeuws bouwwerk uit de dertiende of veertiende eeuw, hoewel gebouwd op eerdere Romeinse en Arabische gebouwen. Uit de Arabische periode staat nog de lantaarn van het kasteel, die dienst deed als vuurtoren
Het Romeinse theater, gebouwd tussen 5 en 1 voor Christus, had een capaciteit van ongeveer 7000 toeschouwers en was in gebruik tot de derde eeuw, vanaf die tijd werden verschillende gebouwen over elkaar heen geplaatst. In 1988 werd het opgegraven. Met een capaciteit van ongeveer 7000 toeschouwers was het een van de grootste in Romeins Hispania, bijna volledig uitgegraven in de rots. Het Romeinse theatermuseum, ontworpen door architect Rafael Moneo, neemt bezoekers mee naar binnen in het monument en verandert het Romeinse theater in zijn laatste grote zaal.
Het Consistorial Palace van Cartagena, ook bekend als het stadhuis van Cartagena, is een van de belangrijkste modernistische gebouwen van de stad, gebouwd tussen 1900 en 1907. Het is een driehoekig gebouw. De gevel is geheel van wit marmer en op het dak vallen de zinken koepels op. De hele buitenkant is herhaaldelijk versierd met de emblemen van de stad: het kasteel van de conceptie van het wapen van de stad en de muurkroon, uitgereikt door de Romeinse generaal Scipio Africanus toen hij de stad Carthago Nova innam.
Indrukwekkend 18e-eeuws gebouw gelegen in de belangrijkste voetgangersstraat van het oude stadscentrum
De stad Carthago Nova was een van de mooiste van het Romeinse rijk. Sinds de Republikeinse tijd had het een groot amfitheater. Het Romeinse forum van Carthago Nova bevond zich in het centrum van de stad, aan de samenvloeiing van de hoofdwegen en tussen de bergen. Het forum bevond zich ongeveer onder het huidige San Francisco-plein en is gedeeltelijk opgegraven. Tot de belangrijkste monumenten van het forum die tot nu toe zijn gevonden, behoren: - Tempel gewijd aan de Capitolijnse triade: Jupiter, Juno en Minerva. - Het august. - De curie, zetel van de regering van de kolonie. - Baden en palestra van de lage keizerlijke periode. - De tempel van Isis.
Bij de Punische muur betreedt u een van de belangrijkste afleveringen in de geschiedenis van de Middellandse Zee, de Punische oorlogen tussen de Carthagers en de Romeinen. Je leert over het legendarische verleden van Qart Hadast, gesticht door generaal Asdrubal in 229 voor Christus en de belangrijkste plek, de muur, een van de weinige Carthaagse overblijfselen die in Spanje zijn gevonden. Bovendien kun je naast de muur de grafcrypte van de hermitage van San Jose zien, gebouwd in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw. De muren bieden een heel eigenaardig picturaal programma, de Dansen van de Dood.

We shared a wonderful afternoon with Noelia. She is a lovely young lady with good history and stories of Cartagena. The Roman Amphitheater is amazing. Lost under rubble and homes for 2000 years and found by chance. The facades of Cartagena are beautiful in the old city. We highly recommend this tour.

Noelia is the most wonderful guide! It felt like we were walking around Cartagena with a friend. Her personal stories as a native of the area brought the history to life. I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t know much about the Spanish Civil War before this trip, but she helped us understand it and its impact to Cartagena and so many other communities. Know if you’re visiting on a Monday that most museums and landmarks are closed, but Noelia was so knowledgeable that it didn’t matter! And she was able to get us into a museum which we had all to ourselves! What a treat, especially since it was raining outside, it gave us a chance to keep learning and dry off :-) She was even kind enough to take us to a place for authentic Asiatico (espresso with Licorice 43 among other tasty ingredients) and help us find a reputable retailer to get a few glasses with the recipe to take home. At the end of our tour she recommended some non-tourist local spots for lunch and she was spot on. We had the most amazing experience because of her expertise, kindness, and patience. I hope to come back in the future and get in contact with her again.
