Luiz gave us what turned out to be a private tour of the Stock Exchange Palace and Sao Francisco Church. He gave us a lot of information and answered our many questions. 4 stars rather than 5– he started our tour by telling us that he would we would spend 40 to 50 minutes at the Stock Exchange and then a quick look at the church that would only take 10 minutes and we would be “out of there in an hour.” We felt like that would be shortchanging us, and let him know that was not our expectation. Towards the end of our tour, he was repeatedly checking his phone and eventually said he had to go to give another tour. We felt like we didn’t have his full attention or enthusiasm. His tour was just not at the 5 star level that we have come to expect from the many Viator tours we have taken.

This tour covers two buildings next door to each other. Our visit started at the old Porto Stock Exchange which is impressive and appears to be only accessible via a tour. Quite quickly we realised the guide was not fully in command of his facts, which in a large group would perhaps not be picked up on, but we were the only people on the tour. Whilst we liked the idea that we were on a personal tour, it meant more questions from us which exposed the guide's lack of knowledgeable detail relating to both what we were being shown and wider knowledge of Portuguese history. As an example, in talking about a portrait on display of one of the Kings, I commented that the plaque showed he had only lived for 33 years and his reply was that people in the past did not live very long. He also told us that the two large chandeliers hanging in the central staircase were made of solid gold, which we thought looked more like bronzed brass. Subsequently I fact-checked this and they are indeed bronze. He then took us into theSao Francisco Church where he had little to say, ended up near the alter and abruptly said that the tour was over, after just 1 hr 10m. He failed to mention that there were catacombs that could be visited and also an attached museum, which we only discovered by asking one of the staff who said it was part of the ticket price. As our guide had left with our tickets, she had to authorise our entry. His English was acceptable but not fluent and this may have been a contributory factor. He was perfectly pleasant but lacked experience and the empathy of other guides we have been fortunate to encounter. In summary, this tour was a disappointment and not value for money!
