Tijdens deze tour verken je drie van de belangrijkste basilieken ter wereld, na St. Peter's: St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major en St. Paul Outside the Walls. De basiliek van Sint-Jan van Lateranen, gebouwd in de 4e eeuw door keizer Constantijn, is de oudste kerk in de westerse wereld. Een voormalige zetel van het pausdom en de huidige zetel van het aartsbisdom van Rome, St. John Latera is de kathedraal van Rome. Tot de vele schatten behoren de originele deuren van de Romeinse curie of het senaatshuis. In de buurt zijn de Scala Sancta (Heilige Trappen) waarvan wordt aangenomen dat ze precies de trappen waren waarop Chist voor Pontius Pilatus terechtstond. St. Mary Major is een van de oudste kerken gewijd aan Maria, de moeder van Jezus, en staat bekend om zijn mozaïeken met scènes uit het leven van Maria. Het herbergt ook het relikwie van de kribbe van Christus. Last but not least is de basiliek van St. Paul Outside the Walls de op één na grootste basiliek na de Sint-Pietersbasiliek. Het werd gesticht op de begraafplaats van St. Paul.

There is NOTHING like Saint Mary Major ranks up there with the Vatican. All 3 were great visits as this was our 4th time to Rome and wanted to see where the late Pope Francis is buried.

Quite knowledgeable tour guide. Knew a lot about historical periods and types/styles of architecture .Excellent driver and vehicle.
Built by Emperor Constatus the Great, it was consecrated in 324, is very beautiful and has one of the 4 Holy Doors that Rome has. Don’t miss out on your visit to the city.

Here’s my review containing just facts: “Around 313 AD, Constantine I, after marrying Fausta, donated the Domus Laterani to the Bishop of Rome. It is believed this donation occurred during the pontificate of Pope Miltiades This donation of the Domus Laterani paved the way for the construction of the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran, which stands on the site today. The basilica is considered the cathedral of Rome and the oldest public church in the Western world. “
We enjoy visiting all three of Papal Basilicas. We went late morning there was not a huge crowd. Seems that is the best time to visit all three Basilicas.

The basilicas are absolutely worth a visit, and our guide was able to explain and show us so much that it added to the experience. Our guide tailored the tour to us as we went. She was very knowledgeable and may the visits so much better than had we done it on our own.
