Het werd gebouwd om de Trinità dei Monti-kerk, die onder de bescherming van de koning van Frankrijk stond, te verbinden met het Spaanse plein eronder. Het lange, driehoekige Spaanse plein is vernoemd naar de Spaanse ambassade bij de Heilige Stoel.
Dit enorme plein werd in 1538 aangelegd om een grandioze toegang te bieden tot wat toen de belangrijkste noordelijke toegangspoort van Rome was. Het is sindsdien verschillende keren gerenoveerd, voor het laatst door Giuseppe Valadier in 1823. In het midden werd de 36 meter hoge obelisk door Augustus uit het oude Egypte gebracht; het stond oorspronkelijk in het Circo Massimo.
Het Pantheon is het best bewaarde oude gebouw in Rome en nog een must-see toeristische attractie om aan je lijst toe te voegen! Oorspronkelijk gewijd aan alle godheden uit de mythologie, werd het een christelijke kerk in de 7e eeuw. Bewonder binnen de immense koepel en de oculus (de opening in de koepel), waardoor de ruimte een unieke verlichting krijgt. In het Pantheon zie je ook de graven van Raphael (de beroemde kunstenaar) en Victor Emmanuel II (1e koning van Italië).
De Piazza Navona ligt in het hart van het historische centrum, niet ver van het Pantheon. het is een van de mooiste en beroemdste pleinen van Rome! Daar kunt u de Bernini's Fontein van de Vier Rivieren bewonderen.
Geniet van de Janiculum-wandeling, een pad dat op en neer gaat in het Janiculum-park langs de marmorbustes van de belangrijkste strijders en helden van het Italiaanse Risorgimento. Probeer op het grote plein waar de fontein staat je ogen te sluiten, open ze dan weer en je ziet een van de meest adembenemende panorama's van Rome: op de achtergrond twaalf heuvels. Het beste moment om "il Fontanone" te bezoeken is de zonsondergang.
De Aventijn heuvel is een van de oorspronkelijke 7 heuvels van Rome en een van de mooiste plekken in de stad. Gelegen net voor een andere, beroemdste heuvel, de Palatijn, is de Aventijn nu een welvarende, lommerrijke woonwijk met een aantal prachtige kerken, mooie straten, verborgen juweeltjes en zelfs een prachtig uitzicht over Rome. Een ander verborgen juweeltje in Rome dat in de loop van de tijd steeds minder verborgen raakt, is het geheime Aventijnse sleutelgat. Laten we samen het geheim ontdekken!

Truly an unforgettable afternoon between the Arch of Janus and Portunnus, Temple of Hercules and the grandiose Circus Maximus. This tour introduced me to a part of Rome that I had not yet discovered. It 'was very interesting to follow the explanations of Joseph, our guide; who in a simple and adequate way described the area of the Forum Boarium with its temples, its churches and the wonderful Circus Maximus. I really like to participate in these cultural walks because they are always well organized and always with an extremely prepared guide who every time immerses us, with his explanations, in the world of ancient Rome. We visited the area of the Forum Boario starting from the magnificent square where the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin is located, and then proceed to the Circus Maximus stopping gradually in the various Basilicas and archaeological sites. An afternoon full of history!!! A unique and complete enrichment, I learned with amazement and wonder so much information unknown to me. I have to thank the guide Giuseppe for his excellent preparation and his simple but incisive way of explaining. I am glad to have heard about the church Santa Maria in Cosmedin where the Mouth of Truth and the beautiful mosaic are located, the immense Circus Maximus, the churches of San Giorgio al Velabro and Santa Anastasia, the arch of Janus and the Temples of Hercules and Portunnus.
