De opera teathre van Palermo staat bekend als de locatie van de meest dramatische scène van The Godfather III. Hoe dan ook, dit monument is ook een symbool van de wedergeboorte van de stad na tientallen jaren van maffia-geweld.
De langste muurschildering in Italië (70 meter lang) vertegenwoordigt enkele van de bekendste maffia-slachtoffers en maakt deel uit van een stadsvernieuwingsproject. Het is zowel de kans om vertrouwd te raken met de gezichten van de slachtoffers als om mooie foto's te maken!
De kleurrijke oude openluchtmarkt is de perfecte plek om de relatie tussen de maffia en winkeliers beter te begrijpen tijdens een wandeling door een van de meest interessante en luidruchtige delen van de stad.
Piazza della Memoria, bij het Palerm Court House, is een monument gewijd aan rechters en openbare aanklagers vermoord door de maffia.
Voor de spectaculaire Arabisch-Normandische kathedraal zal de gids vertellen over de relatie tussen de katholieke kerk en de maffia
Langs de Cassaro kom je tegen met een oranje sticker op hun ramen. Hun eigenaren - zoals deze beroemde gelato-tent - hebben NEE gezegd tegen het betalen van het afpersingsracket, of 'pizzo', en hebben zich aangesloten bij de maffia-vrije kritische consumptiecampagne die wordt gepromoot door de grassroots-beweging Addiopizzo. Ook jij hebt de kans om te stoppen en ze te steunen met wat “goed” shoppen!
Het stadhuis van Palermo is de zetel geweest van corrupte politici, evenals van degenen die hebben gevochten tegen de maffia.

This is well worth the three hours for anybody visiting Palermo and has an interest in learning about the city. Our guide, Valeria, was warm and accommodating and her passion for the city was inspiring! Highly recommend this trip!
Very interesting tour about the Sicilian mafia. The guide could have just been slightly more engaging.
Palermo is a dump. Lovely architecture but ruined by the national pastime of chucking fags on the floor. Litter everywhere and we think a strike by refuse workers (mafia?) Next on the list was Agrigento-some say another gem and a high point of Sicily. Sorry another dump. Litter strewn along along all the streets and roads and the by now ubiquitous fag ends. The cross country journey was interesting and beautiful in parts but there is still litter. My wife, who studied Development at uni, says it is a developing region. The rubbish and the smoking point to issues evident in a developing country. We won’t be back. Its a discarica
